Whats With All The Season Finale's This Month?

Lost, Will And Grace, 24, Idol, That 70's Show, House, etc etc etc

Is May the normal month for season finales on TV or is this year just exceptionally busy?

I honestly cant remember having seen this many end of season shows before

    Regards,

    Lee

Actually, with the exception of cable which follows their own schedule, this is quite normal. But lately, more and more shows are doing extra long hour or two hour finales, so it does seem like there is more hype around a lot of finales this year for some reason. Plus Will and Grace, That 70s Show, Alias, The West Wing, and other were also SERIES finales so they got more attention I think.

The normal network TV season runs from September to May. Plus May is one of the 3 sweeps months in the year (the others are November and February). Those are the months the networks use to set their advertising rates for the year, so you'll see more of the special episodes, mini-series, movies, etc. as they break out the best they have to offer... And today happens to be the last day of May sweeps, so the two big finales left American Idol and Lost air tonight. Then with the exception of a few new reality shows, it is rerun mania all summer.

Can you tell I watch too much TV? :square:

    yeah to what Goldie said.

July is also sweeps month, but July and February aren't very significant because they don't run in all 210 TV markets only in select few.

Markets like Boston that have Local people meters (using pager-like devices) instead of diaries where you write what you watch, don't have sweeps per-se, they compete for eyeballs year round, just the advertisers use May/November as an average for ratings performance

Cable doesn't have sweeps that's why you see constant hype on the news channels because for them every day is crucial and they get compared constantly even hour-by-hour.

When local people meters get introduced in all 210 markets which is years away, all the hype will die down or get ratched up.

Yes, May is typically the month that most TV shows end their seasons. That's why they have "May sweeps."

TV seasons run September through May, just like school.

This year, it just turned out that a lot of shows were having their SERIES finales as well... Charmed, West Wing, Will & Grace, Alias, That 70s Show, etc.

Ya know... I absolutely fucking HATED the last year and a half of "That 70's Show." It jumped the shark when Eric left. Kelso.. meh... he was just a supporting character. But when Eric left and they replaced him with the cartoonish god awful character of Randy, I stopped watching. The finale, however, actually made me get all misty eyed. They wrote Randy out in 5 minutes, brought back Kelso, put Jackie and Fez together, gave Hyde his own record store, Red & Kitty aren't moving to Florida... and Eric came back. And when Eric came back, you knew damn well that Donna wasn't going back to school. It was a good ending to a decent show. I actually laughed while watching it, which I haven't done for "That 70's Show" in a good long while.

The "24" ending was mediocre, I thought.

The series finale of "Will and Grace" was just like every other episode for me: boring & forced jokes, a tired storyline and just nothing that made me care. I lost interest as soon as Kevin Bacon made his cameo... which was about 45 seconds into the show. I am probably oging to get crucified for this, but I am glad "Will & Grace" is over. I only like a handful of episodes... and those were form the first three seasons. I shouldn't have to pretend to like a show or be required to like a show about gay people just because I am gay. I could not fucking stand the 2nd season of "Queer As Folk", either. Or the 3rd. Or the 4th.

Enough of my likes an dislikes. If TV Guide needs a new writer for "Cheers & Jeers", they know where to find me.

I got tired of that show about halfway thru its very first season, and haven't watched it since.

I watched every season except for this year. I just couldn't invest the time in it this year. It's exhausting trying to keep up with that one.

I rather enjoyed Will & Grace. I didn't like it any more or any less b/cuz it was "gay-themed." I just enjoyed the characters. The show got pretty murky the last few years, but there were always bright spots along the way for those who were loyal. Queer as Folk had nothing much to offer in its first three years, but I really enjoyed seasons 4 & 5. That was after they replaced the entire writing staff and the characters actually started acting somewhat like adults for a change.

When Ted's porn studio was raided by the CITY POLICE and he was arrested at a neighbor's house during a dinner party, then became a ahrd core junkie after doing Tina TWICE, I literally started yelling at my TV. I have had a major hatred for that show ever since. There was absolutely NO RESAERCH DONE at ALL when they wrote Seasons 3 & 4!!! None whatsoever. Plots and storylines pulled right out of the writer's asses.

I half-expected someone to convert to *********** and become a drag queen Mayor.
