    Federal Marriage Amendment

Where's the outrage here?! Did I miss a thread on this or something? How come we aren't all discussing this right now?

I think this time around that is is transparent to just about everybody this isnt a real vote but just a bad political ploy--even to Bush Company supporters. They know it has no chance of passing out of either House or Senate and all but the most narrow minded ultra right wing conservatives have other issues they are more concerned about.

I tend to agree with you Chad that Bush is just bowing to the loonies.

But far scarier things have happened in the past 6 years like the forfeiture of our civil liberties with the Patriot Act. No matter how crippled this administration seems, I wouldn't let our guard down for one second. Don't ever underestimate the truly evil.

Everyone's ticked at the Republicans over all manner of things - Iraq, gas prices, scandals and so forth - and so here they are trying to score some votes with am empty gesture.

Even many conservatives see through the shallow move this time around and are left feeling less emboldened than they are patronized.

A few months away from the congressional elections and, with all that's going on in the nation and world today, this is what Congress is going to be spending time on? I should hope that the entire affair breeds more contempt and frustration at a legislature and executive wasting time and being shamelessly opportunistic than anything else.

for me, i have so much outrage over so many things going on that i finally can't say anything because there is just too much to say. seems like our elected officials no longer care about the well being of the people - the few who do are insulted and accused of a political agenda by those who have nothing BUT a political agenda.

it hurts deep inside all the time. there are laws being created to ease the burdens of manufacturing companies, allowing them to release more and more polutants into our soil and air. prejudice against gay people and women in general seem to be encouraged and there is less and less concern about health and education and more and more about forcing one religion's morals into schools, education and everywhere else.

then the so-called triumphs, like more jobs. no one mentions that those jobs are all 15 - 20% lower salaries than the exact same jobs were several years ago. yet prices are going up, gas has gone crazy and more and more people are losing everything they have to medical and credit card debt.

there's a point at which i personally overload with it all.

Personally, who has the ENERGY to get outraged over anything this man does anymore? Honestly, at this point, nothing he does or says shocks me. This is obviously nothing more than a ploy to get voters back on his side for the election in November. Are the American people so stupid that they don't recognize this? Seriously, who doesn't see how Bush is manipulating Congress? What a sorry-assed excuse for a president.

"Neither party expects the amendment to pass. It does not have anywhere near the two-thirds support it would need for approval in the Senate, let alone the two-thirds it would need in the House of Representatives before being taken up by the states — three-fourths of which would have to approve the measure for it to become law."

I totally respect and understand where you are coming from Patti. And I'm truly afraid that the lack of protest we see is not from apathy but the sheer frustration of being overwhelmed by bad news.

People that would normally be outraged and flooding the streets in protest are simply shutting down and going into self-preservation mode. Is this new for Americans? Have we ever laid down when we should have stood up? Americans are becoming more like Saddam-era Iraqis or Communist-era Soviets... be quiet, don't make waves, do the best with what you got and hope that it will all be over soon.

    Part of that article:

As that hearing gets under way, debate on the marriage amendment will enter its second day on the Senate floor. All but one of the Senate Democrats _ the exception is Ben Nelson of Nebraska _ oppose the measure and, with moderate Republicans, are expected to block an up- or-down vote, killing the measure for the year.

Democrats say the amendment is a divisive bow to religious conservatives, and point out that it conflicts with the GOP's opposition to big government interference.

They need to get some real work done instead of all this grandstanding!

I've thought on this as well and my conclusion is that, as Americans, we are overworked, underpaid, and overindulgent. Who wants to protest in person when you can bitch online? When you're so tired from working 2-3 jobs to survive who has the energy to even watch the news, let alone be outraged, when you can have some fast food, sit back, and watch a sitcom or play a video game, maybe spend a few minutes with your kids? .000002 cents

then the best thing you can say about it is we spent many thousands of dollars and wasted our lawmakers' time when they could have been working on something that could have been of use to someone.

considering all those katrina victims still living in tents and trailers that are not rated for any serious wind, and the fact that michael chertoff says FEMA is ready for hurrican season (what an idiot!), this might have been a good place to focus the attentiuon.

It doesn't have the votes to pass the Senate. That means the second after they announce the roll call, it's over.

Plus, this particular effort appears to typical Americans, I hope, more like a naked attempt at stoking votes in an election year. Congress has really tied itself into knots, so if the Republicans lose their majority in the House or Senate than they earned it.

The Democrats and Clinton were always called on the carpet for pandering, and so should the GOP leaders today. I think that this particular gambit will fail.

Every four year cycle more opponents of gay marriage end up in cemetaries. Politics is about winning, so all that matters is getting 50% + 1.
