    What resolution do most surfers use?

    Not what we as webmasters use, but what do the average surfers use?

    I think computers come with 800x600 out of the box, right?
    I dont know if most people change that or leave it how it is.

    Im making a tour and dont know what resolution to design for more.

    a very hard answer for a simple question

    I've researched this a bunch, and I've had a hard time finding a definite answer - however, its probably different for everybody and probably depends on your audience, content and the design of your site

    overall, I've concluded the following:
    now, the majority of surfers use 1024x768 or higher, although many still use 800x600

    HOWEVER, it is my understanding that even thought surfers with 1024x768 resolution have larger window possibilities, they typically don't maximize the window as they probably did with 800x600

    in terms of web design, it looks like a lot of people are adopting widths of 900 pixels, placing a non essential content column on the right hand side

    hope this helps :angel:

    W3Schools(.com) says 1204 x768 is the most commonly used resolution.

    A much used bookmark:
    http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

    January 2006
    Higher = 17%
    1024x768 = 57%
    800x600 = 20%
    640x480 = 0%
    Unknown = 6%

    I always build for 1024x768 but then check to make sure it doesn't look hideous (to me LOL) on 800x600. If it does I created a 800x600 version and add a link to it on my index page.

    My stats have said to optimaze for 1024x768 surfers for about 3yrs....climbing consistantly each year as being the 'norm'.

    i try to get designers to fill 800x600. that way the pages look okay in both 800x600 and 1024x768. when i built a couple things for 1024 that required sideways scrolling for 800x600 users, i saw a drop in sales - not huge, but enough.

    I agree 100% with Basschick.

    A 1024 surfer doesnt mind a 800

    But IF even 20% of your surfers are 800, why risk it.

    Concerning Armpit,

    IMHO everything on every site should be essential in some way.

    I know I use a 1280 LCD,

    But I dock Trillian, and ICQ, so sometimes I go down to 800

    And i hooke up w/ a guy and i wanted to show a video to start the fun and he was on 600 but he was still a member of a couple paysites.

    Best bet go for the lowest common demoninator where u can make it work.

    At least we are over the web safe pallet. LOL.

    Anything non essential, especially if it has a link, is just a waste IMHO.
