DVD Producers - Question About BarCodes...

Do you folks register your barcodes anywhere or do you just make them up?

Is it even worth bothering with a UPC on your DVD titles?

Any advice you can offer on this matter would be appreciated

    Regards,

    Lee

You definitely should not make up a barcode. The proper way to do it is to register with the Uniform Code Council, but that's expensive.

The alternative route is to go to one of the many companies that will sell you one of their barcodes.

    https://www.indierec.com/s-barcodes-register.html

their barcodes are primarily sold for indie bands and so forth, but would work fine for DVDs.

More and more retailers are requiring barcodes for inventory tracking, so it is a good idea to have a proper barcode.

No Lee, you don't want to make up bar codes!

The bar code is the ideal way of tracking inventory and all retailers we sell to require them on the DVD titles we sell - especially the giant retail chains such as Tower Records and Virgin Records.

You can register with the UCC (uniform code council) to get your own company number (good idea) for about $700 (+-) which then allows you, as a member to get an exclusive code for each product for about $25-$35...

A way around this, is to have your distributor assign the numbers to you for each product.

Either way, tracking is essential in the world market and this is often an easy way to identify fraudulant merchandise.

Google the UCC and see what you come up with...it's been a long time since we initially registered... we assign each new title with a number and our printer places the bar code in the appropriate white box on the covers.

If your going to play in the retail market you absolutely want bar codes. Our experience all the big chains are starting to require them. The good news at many of these outlets when they scan the title the computer automatically sets up a reorder!

    bar codes

    hi Lee,
Like everyone else said you don't want to attempt to make up your own bar code, just asking for unecessary grief. If you have only a few items and don't want to pay the $700 for the UCC you can google bar code and it gives you alternatives. I used simplybarcodes.com. They were $89.00 each. They send them via email in 300dpi hi res file that you can download.

We fianlly broke down and started with Barcodes.. and no.. you don't want to just make them up.. it's a head ache that will come back to haunt you.

if your product is scanning as something else, you've got a BIG problem. REturns, inventory woes, and someone else being paid for product you sold.

Now that Fratmen is finally going to start distributing DVDs to stores, we took the plunge and got proper barcodes. Many stores dont' deal with you if you dont'.
