Sad 50% Of Child Porn Comes From The USA

LONDON - New half year figures released Thursday from the Internet Watch Foundation reveal that just 0.2 percent of child abuse images on the Internet are hosted in the U.K., down from 18 percent in 1997.

However, according to the report, some websites containing child abuse content hosted abroad remain accessible for up to five years despite being reported to the relevant authorities.

The IWF is a U.K.-based organization funded by the European government. The organization operates an Internet hot line for the public and IT professionals to report child abuse images hosted anywhere in the world, criminally obscene content hosted in the U.K., and inciting, racially charged content hosted in the U.K.

“U.K. ministers continue to press for greater action at an international level, but this report underlines the importance of the work the IWF and ISPs are doing to block all U.K. residents from accessing websites, wherever they are hosted, identified as potentially illegal by the IWF by the end of 2007,” says Vernon Coaker MP, undersecretary for Policing, Security and Community Safety, Home Office.

The IWF report also reveals the continuation of a trend for hosting non-commercial images of child abuse on Japanese message boards and a growing trend for U.S. free-hosting systems to be abused. The first half of 2006 also showed online photo-album services are being used for posting images of child abuse and an emerging trend for the distribution of child abuse videos online.

About half of the reported content was traced to the U.S., 15 percent to Russia, 12 percent to Japan, and 9 percent to Spain. The IWF stated that the high figure for the U.S. is more indicative of the magnitude of the territory rather than the problem.

So with about 50% of all child porn content coming from the USA, this really makes me wonder about how we can improve our current laws to legislate against the exploitation of children i mean, the laws we have at present certainly dont seem to be doing anything based on those figure

The full report can be found here http://www.iwf.org.uk/corporate/page.160.htm

    Lee

I would like to see the number behind this study, if they are counting self-pics as CP, and you have to take in account most of the people online are in the US too. If you really broke it down I am sure things would balance out allot more. Studies like this do nothing but add ammunition to people that want to stop what we all do for a living. :boo:

Interesting article lee. I know the UK authorities have been working hard to tackle cp and also brits abusing kids abroad. Just goes to show that when the police get off there arse and fight crime, we can achieve remarkable results.

I know man, but when you break down the numbers there is a much higher % of people online in the US, and many many more 17 year old kids with cam pics they put online. Personally I would find it a bit hard to believe that people in the US are really more likely to be spreading CP around that other places, their is just more of them

But when you consider you only view english sites, think of the people online who dont speak english. There are probably more internet users in the world than there are people in america! I was shocked that 20 % of cp came from the uk pre 97 but im guessing there only monitoring english speaking sites in that figure. Even so considering the number of people who speak english, its still a big figure.

Absolutely not true. There are a number of countries that have a higher % of people online than in the US, and countries like China that are coming online so quickly that non-US/non-English-speaking users of the Net are expected to surpass English speakers by either 2007 or 2008.

Another brilliant example of Max's wisdom pulled from his ass instead of from actual facts.

Name one English speaking country that have a bigger presents online than the US, this study only included sites in English as far as I and everyone else could tell. So if you can prove something I would be glad to hear about it but willing to bet you just being a asshole as normal. And its not 2007-2010 yet BTW

the word "english" doesn't appear in either article. do a search of the page.

and the articles talked about japanese message boards, so i seriously doubt they are talking about only sites that are in english. there is no reason to believe that at all that i am aware of.

I don't plan to read the story - I'll just form an opinion off of the response from people I think read the story.
