How Much Does Branding Play Its Role In..

    The products you buy overall?

I have to admit im a brand name freak whether it be food, clothing, scents or anything else

Anyway just figured i would throw this question out into the fray and see what the rest of you are like when it comes to brands and shopping

I have to admit, this thread will also serve as a bit of research for me to

    Regards,

    Lee

Brands don't generally make a difference to me... The only exception I can think of is my favorite record labels, Century Media and Nuclear Blast. I buy virtually anything that comes out on both of these labels.

Other than that, there's a clothing company that I buy a lot of, but not 'cause it's cool, but 'cause it's cheap, and the stuff fits me well.

I'm gonna have to hand my gay card in now, aren't I?

I usually don't pay attention to brand names. For clothes, i just want something that looks good and comfortable... Brand names don't mean that at all.. just means you're gonna pay more for usually the same thing you can get twice cheaper. And i always find stuff that i like from an unknown name.

Electronics... well, i surely won't buy a TV "katakouti" made in bambooloozoo. I'm picky when it comes to that so yeah it'd better be a brand name that i know very well.

Food, well i could eat shit for all i care I'm not a food person, just need to eat because i have too... other than that, just a waste of my precious time

Oh also, for toilet paper...mmm.... believe me... always go with a brand name just my 2 cents

In most cases I'm definitely a brand name shopper

    Clothes - Yes (Definitely)
Electronics - Yes (Quality is important)
    Computers - No
Food - Taste is the decider here

    Cheers

When $ is tight, I shop for value regardless of brand name.

    I hear ya there, bud!

Now, I think you make a good point though...

For me, I used to be a brand name whore. Today I'm not. Except for things I put on my skin. Then I think twice before buying generic and cheap.

Does brand name matter when you use it on yourself? Not clothing but items like shampoo, shaving cream, deordorant and the like.

it does kinda yes and no. depending
quality style and price do it for me

for food, doesn't matter as long as it tastes good.

clothes - i have some preferences but nothing's set in stone. i wear mostly jeans and t-shirts - levi's and nike or adidas shirt is my fave. and i buy my t-shirts from Ross. their jeans suck so I pay full price at the department stores

shoes - i have to have my nikes simply because of the comfort and quality I can't wear shoes and dont like to

toiletries - only for the shaving cream and the shaver.
perfumes - anythign that smells good regardless of brand as long as it doesnt cost too much

price place a big part too. we went to nordstrom last week and some flaming queen tried to sell me on a pair of $100 jeans because they were some brand name by this hot hot designer i just had to have because everyone was wearing them. nice jeans but they weren't even on sale

I've found that some off-brands actually work better than the name brands. For instance - the Equate equivalent of Tylenol Sinus/Allergy over @ Wal-Mart works BETTER and LONGER than the real stuff from Tylenol. I also like their version of Claritin for my daughter's allergies... $3.44/12 tablets versus $15.99 for Claritin brand and she says she can't tell the difference.

Now my son is another story... he's a NASCAR fan and has been trained since the age of 2 to pay attention to advertising, brand names, who uses what and what's on his favorite driver's car. We went through a period where he wouldn't TOUCH a Coke because Jeff Gordon drinks PEPSI. And he would only eat FRITO LAY chips because Jeff had a Fritos symbol on his car... When we re-designed his bathroom we had to buy the Dupont rugs and towels... I mean - it gets ridiculous!

So... maybe if you want to target your advertising to brand whores, go for the NASCAR people. Sincerely, never in my life have I seen so many grown men (and women!) dress entirely from head-to-toe like one giant walking advertisement for some product just because their favorite racecar driver is sponsored by that company. You see giant people billboards for Bud, M&M's, Napa Auto Parts, Miller Lite, Kellogg's cereals - you name it!

    It's maddness!!!

    right on kath
big corporations often re-brand products made by other companies to save money. they just slap their logo on it and sell it with a higher price.

in bulgaria people are very obsessed with brands, big time. when i was growing up, my early teens, we were obsessed with brands. that's where me wearing only Nike sport shoes started. my parents were rich so I could afford it(attention whore?) and it was like this urge to buy anything that carries the Nike swoosh logo and it had to be an original, since the turks imported so many cheap hacks - Nekki,Niik, Adibas, Rezzbok etc, which costs even more $$$.
All that was advertised on MTV had to have it - the swatch wrist watch, the CK1 perfume that just came out, Joop perfume.

when i moved to the states, i had a whole $1000 to waste on whatever, so i wanted to buy me the same junk i had in bulgaria but it had to say on the label "Made in America", that's your bragging rights over there as being THE original Nike shirt and not something made underground in Istanbul. Well, reality check, there's nothing made in America, all of it is made by little Taiwan people.

Branding doesn't do much for me. If it's priced right or worth it I 'll buy. If not no sale.
