Porn Stars as Silver Screen Actors

Anyone see Matthew Rush in the new gay spoof "Another Gay Movie"?

Can porn actors successfully make this transition without their background haunting or inhibiting them?

You do realize by 'gay' I mean a man who has sex with other men?

You know, i think it is a lot easier for straight pornstars, just look at Jenna, she has quite successfully infiltrated the 'mainstream' and nobody seems to care about it LOL

I guess ultimately, it depends on how the actor portrays themselves outisde of the industry, Jenna has always acted in a professional and business-like manner from what i have seen/heard of her so i dont see why more adult actors couldnt go the same route also.

    Oh in addition...

I think the recent influx of actors having their own 'sex tapes' has helped porn get acceptance in the mainstream too.

I mean, hell, if Colin Farrel, Paris Hilton and the rest of those horny Hollywood actors / actresses can do 'porn' why cant it work the other way around?

    Lee

Agree .. somewhat.. But it's a known fact that straight men are much more tolerant of women in alternative lifestyles and employment...many thinking it's even cool for girls to be lesbians, have done porn, etc. because they are "babes" and they got to see their "tits" part of the lure of hollywood actresses anyway. How many straight men fantasize about seeing hollywood actresses naked? How many straight men rush to see a film if their favorite starlet is naked in the film?

My point being, it's a bigger market for girls who have been in porn, or are lesbians to make a cross over to a broader market than a gay man or a man that has done porn.

    Tom,

Whilst i would agree with aspects of your post, i think you are overly simplifying things.

How many gay men fntasize about seeing Hollywood actors naked? How many gay men (or women) rush to see a movie if their favorite star is in it?

It all total depends on the market being attracted, like the recent BrokeBack Mountain movie, it was, primarily marketed towards the gay community yet, it was embraced a lot more by the straight community.

If you market a movie, actually scrap that, if you market a 'product' to the correct demographic you are going to see positive results in the outcome.

Ultimately, movies are products and, to some extent, the actors and actresses starring in them are what adds product appeal, irrespective of whether or not, imho, they have or havent done 'porn' in the past.

    Regards,

    Lee

I don't see porn stars, gay OR straight, successfully transitioning to real "acting" careers (at least, nothing that would qualify for the glory of the name "silver screen" unless they aren't really porn "stars" and only have one or two obscure titles under their belts that they can pretend to be ashamed of later.

While Jenna might be accepted in the mainstream as a legit businesswoman and have a little crossover success, porn stars don't stand a chance of being taken very seriously -- they are viewed as jokes or at best, novelties, with maximum power in in-joke cameo roles.

    That's my opinion, anyway.

Interesting -- still, if it's anything like what I see on her imdb profile as up-and-coming non-adult stuff (http://imdb.com/name/nm0001398/) it looks like horror b-movie type stuff which will hardly get her taken seriously as an "actress".

It's like when Cindy Crawford tried to launch her acting career (though I don't doubt Jenna has more talent and draw than CC does .

I think that it's tough enough as it is for any actor to get a break- even the good ones.

If an adult star has his or her sights on mainstream and is willing to subject themselves to loads of rejection - talent or adult-history based - then with a little bit of luck they'll get their break.

They have to be good actors as well - nobody seems to mention that....

Actually, Lee, Brokeback WASN'T marketed to the gay community, but to the mainstream community. That was one of the criticisms that many gay people had about the movie. The promos for The Night Listener and Running with Scissors are also similarly tight-lipped about any gay content. The assumption is that the gay community will already know about the gay content in these films, so it would behoove the studios more to market to the mainstream community to attract a wider audience. In my eyes, it's a very good move. Why preach to the choir when you can change the minds of the whole world?

Regarding the original post, I wouldn't call roles on Melrose Place and in a few B-movies "a successful cross-over" for Traci Lords, and Jenna Jameson has yet to be featured in a legit film of any merit. So let's not assume that hetero porn models have made that breakthrough just yet.

I actually think that gay porn stars would have an easier time of it crossing over into mainstream gay movies, just because we are so much more lenient when it comes to sexuality in our culture. Sex is everywhere, and porn stars are used to advertise just about everything to the gay community. It's infiltrated just about every faction of marketing to some degree. So it makes total sense that certain porn models would be more eagerly embraced by gay movie-goers. For the most part, we just don't have that stigma about sex, since it's such a big part of our lives to begin with. (By the way, in addition to Matthew Rush appearing in Another Gay Movie, Zak Spears makes a cameo--using his real name, I might add--in Forgiving the Franklins. And Andy Zellner, whose recently published book Going Down in La-La Land charts his experience as a porn model, appered in Wash Westmoreland's The Fluffer.)

Speaking of Wash, I am very happy that he is getting such rave reviews and attention for Quinceanera, which is currently playing at the ArcLight here in Hollywood. For a long time, it was thought that those who worked in porn could not make successful cross-overs into mainstream. And not only did Wash direct porn, but he directed GAY PORN, and look at him now. There are write-ups on the movie in Premiere and Entertainment Weekly and just about every major movie mag out there, and the movie is getting rave reviews. I myself wrote a feature on the movie for IN Los Angeles. (It's one of my best entertainent features so far.)

I think that indie filmmaking has made it possible for just about anyone with the vision and the persistence to do whatever it is they want to do, because it's now possible to operate outside the guidelines of the studio system in Hollywood. You can cast who you want to cast and make the movies you want to make. It's all about not letting corporate Hollywood get in your way.

I should add a qualifier to my above post:

Matthew Rush's appearance in Another Gay Movie isn't necessarily a "mainstream breakthrough." AGM is, of course, a movie that is being marketed primarily toward the gay community, and most of the porn stars who have "crossed over" have only done so into gay indie films.

I think it's easier for gay porn stars to cross over into the GAY mainstream, but not into the bigger mainstream, but again, with indie filmmaking becoming so prevalent now, anything is possible -- for both gay and straight porn models, directors, videographers, etc. etc. Like I said, it's all about not letting anybody hold you down, but going out there and doing it yourself.

I think we will see a lot more porn folk "crossing over" in the years ahead.

The exceptional Tracy Lords made a transition from porn into Melrose Place and a few other main stream movies, videos and appearances - most definitely, an "exception" - not the rule.

As a matter of fact, Tracy Lords appeared in over 117 (+-) porn movies and magazine spreads as an "under-age" model between the ages of 17-18 - prior to going main stream.

THE LAW signed by President Reagan on October 18, 1986 imposed new and specific obligations on (we) producers of explicit sexual conduct. When we see mandatory references to "Section 18 U.S.C. 2257" or "Section 75 C.F.R" and fuss about all of the stuff we need to deal with, we're looking directly at a silent homage to Traci Lords.

Not that people can't transition - the world is certainly open enough for anyone to make a go of it - its just that PORN STARS CAN'T ACT!

...and, faking a cum shot for a "facial reaction" doesn't count!
