designating work

lately i've talked to a lot of people who are trying to do everything themselves - including grunt work they could pay someone much less per hour than their time is worth. or work that they work extra hard at and don't do as well as someone with experience.

maybe it seems funny since i get paid by other webmasters, but i pay a designer to do all my designs. they can do it faster, better, and i can spend my time doing something i do well. it works out for me. i also pay someone to do things like resize all my gallery pics and make the thumbs for the galleries.

AJ and I try and delegate everything that we can, mostly to our two in-house people. This includes much of our video editing, photo resizing, loading the CMS for the site updates, preparing the sets (resizing and watermarking), and handling some of the customer service issues.

We use outsourced people (freelancers) for consultation on issues we aren't the strongest at, for graphic design, programming, and some promotion.

But even with that, there are some things that aren't a great use of our time that right now would simply be inconvenient or would just take too long to teach someone else how to do, so we do end up doing at least some stuff that could be delegated.

And we burn an insane amount of time on really stupid shit -- 2 hours here or there dealing with the drama our progammer or staff members have, or arguing with this or that vendor, that sort of thing.

more or less, everything here is in-house, and the various tasks are completed by those (persons or departments) best suited to do so.

We HAD a guy working for us whom simply refused to have faith in the abilities of others (also, thought it would get him somewhere, quicker).
He always did things, slowly, and on his own.

He delayed "production" so much and so often, every person here wanted him gone!

I am at a cross roads myself on some things. Like accounting, man I hate accounting, but I would rather keep that in my control as of right now, especially with taking over an existing company. But it sure does take a lot of time.

My other issue is auditing my content database for any 2257 issues. It would be so much easier to have someone else do it, because it takes a lot of time. But, with the risk of me going to jail, I won't let anyone else do it.

I'm sure soon enough, I'll at least hire a part time book keeper to work with my CPA so I don't have to do any accounting anymore.

I've recently seen the light, too. I'm a one-man office, but I broke down and found a freelance php programmer and a cartoonist. They're both doing an excellent job doing things I could never do. I also have an appointment with a publicist today.

It's time to make my site more professional looking and encourage more affiliates to, ahem, do the job of promoting my site.

I'm gearing up to make a big splash in Phoenix!

I tend to do a lot of stuff myself simply because most of what i do isnt something i have found others capable of doing to *my* standards.. Including Gary LOL

On the rare occasions i do find someone ill gladly farm out the work, anything that free's up my time as of late is a good thing :thumbsup:

agreed! , there are too many jobs i perform which no one can match in proficiency and time , i can't even find a maid that actually moves the refridgerator/stove/etc. to sweep & mop behind.
