Jean-Claude Van Damme Announces "I'm HIV+"

On June 20, 2006 Jean-Claude Van Damme publicly announced his HIV positive status. He refused to comment on the manner in which he contracted the disease stating, "I want to use my final years to contribute to society and support the industry that has given me so much." SOURCE


Is this really true? I can't believe it.

I googled it and found these results as well

I must have missed this in the mainstream media.

If he is it's a shame, hopefully he's arrested it in time and taking good care of himself. One good thing is he'll at least have the money to get the proper medications and stuff for himself and maybe throw another spotlight on a global issue that we all need to address and find a cure for.

i liked the movie "cyborg" ( B-rated scifi ) i never really cared much for him as an actor (thank god there was a supporting cast to carry the film) and as a person (based on interviews and news/mag articles) i cared even less and found him so self-absorbed in himself i was surprised he even took notice of others around him.

It looks like the reference to HIV was removed from Mr. Van Damme's wikipedia entry. I scanned it and didn't see anything.

Wow you're right! There was a whole section on it and it was titled in bold "HIV Status" and now it's gone.

What you see in some of the google results is exactly what was in Wikipedia.

I will now NEVER trust Wikipedia. So anyone can put something up and take it off just like that?

That's the whole purpose of wiki...

Wikipedia is a good starting point but I always check source documents if I want to know the absolute truth.

I highly doubt that an hiv-positive Jean-Claude Van Damme would make such a statement.

FINAL YEARS? I think everyone has learned by now that an HIV+ diagnosis does not equal immediate death.

Yeah that's why I questioning if it was true or not. "final years" give me a break AND if he did have HIV he'd use the opporutunity to elevate his visibility and mild it for as much publicity as possible, like he's done with other stuff before. I did an IMDB search on him and the guy has been working quite a lot doing a lot of movie, none of which I've heard of.
