From the Salt Lake Tribune (this afternoon):

"Cannon's remark about kids "egging on" Foley refers to an unsubstantiated report by the online Drudge Report that said an initial email cited in the scandal was a "prank." No other news media has confirmed that report, and since then three other pages have come forward to say they received lurid messages from Foley."

Did anybody catch Keith Olbermann last night? THIS you gotta see. It's 12 minutes long and well worth it.

He won't be charged with anything. If going after someone under 18 in a place where 16 is the age of consent makes him a *********, then most US states endorse pedophilia. Only a handful of states have the age of consent set at 18. The "****!" claim is coming from Dems looking for blood.

This is really just a moral issue and a question of what the Republican party actually stands for. Foley had to resign in the name of preserving the (false) Republican image.

If he was a Democrat he would have been able to stay in office and probably be re-elected. That is what Gerry Stubbs did, who was actually caught having sex with a 17yo male page. Not just having dirty chats with them. Then of course Barney Frank gets called out for having a boyfriend who runs a male prostitute business out of their home. He too got re-elected.

But again, the Dems are not the party that comes out against gays. So the Repukes deserve everything they get.


I didn't catch the whole thing, but there was a gay rights activist group on Bill O'Reilly. The guy said that within the next few weeks he was going to release the names of closeted gay Republicans who have been taking anti-gay stances in public. If he does in fact do this and there is some substance to the claims, it's over for the Republicans.

That would only apply if both the kid and foley were in DC at the time. If the kid was in another jurisdiction like Pennslyvania and Foley was in Florida at the time then the DC law does not apply.

I liked what Bill Maher had to say about it on Friday night's Real Time (my favorite show on television). He pointed out that the page was not a "boy," but a "young man," and that the kid DID, in fact, encourage Foley at some point.

My beef is not so much with the age thing. If the kid had been 15 or under, I would be a little more weary of it, but 16 is certainly old enough for the kid to know what he was doing. And I have no doubts he knew what he was doing. Still, it was entirely inappropriate for Foley to send those emails b/cuz of the power structure that exists because of his job.

I don't support any claims of pedophilia. To me, that involves children of a much younger age, no matter what state laws say. All this nonsense about pedophilia is really just a lot of sturm & drang to get better press and cause a scandal to make the Republicans look bad.

Foley is a sick fuck, but not a true *********. He was apparently attracted to underage boys, those 16 and 17 year olds that worked near him. I disagree with Ken's assessment that boys that age know what they are doing. From my work as a prosecutor and prosecuting young people that age for their crimes, boys that are 16 and 17 do not have a good grasp of right and wrong, actions and consequences. HOWEVER, a 54 year old Congressman is certainly expected to know that what he was doing was very wrong.

Even if this boy had been 18 years old, a 54 year old chasing after an 18 year old is still a predator to me.





The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (F65.4) defines pedophilia as "a sexual preference for children, boys or girls or both, usually of prepubertal or early pubertal age."

The APA's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th edition, Text Revision gives the following as its "Diagnostic criteria for 302.2 Pedophilia":

* Over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children (generally age 13 years or younger).
* The person has acted on these urges, or the sexual urges or fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty.
* The person is at least age 16 years and at least 5 years older than the child or children in Criterion A.

Do not include an individual in late adolescence involved in an ongoing sexual relationship with a 12 or 13-year-old.
