    Clean up the Internet

    Recent news from Australia

More than 20,000 people have signed a petition tabled in the Senate, demanding internet pornography be blocked in all households, schools and public libraries.

In June, the government announced it would offer all households internet filters for their computers, but the opposition says the plan does not go far enough.

Labor wants all internet service providers (ISPs) to offer a "clean feed" internet service to households, schools and public libraries, blocking all websites identified as containing child pornography, acts of extreme violence and X-rated material.

"Labor believes that the government should do everything within its power to protect our kids from exposure to damaging internet content," Stephen Conroy said in a statement.

Senator Conroy presented the petition to the Senate, containing 20,646 signatures which he said supported Labor's plan.

"The petition that I tabled today clearly shows that this view is widely shared in the Australian community," he said.

Now why does this make me think of all the cars having seat belts - but we had to have laws passed to make you use them? Don't they see that self regulation is by far the better solution???

[sarcastic]Gee, why didn't anyone think of this before? It should be so easy for ISPs to implement.[/sarcastic]

    Give me a frickin' break!

To a point i agree with them. I mean why not block cp sites? I would point out though that most schools and librarys (here in the uk at least) run there own blocking programs and to block something legal in housholds just because the government doesnt like it is called censorship.

But if its illegal, ie cp, making bombs, hate sites etc, then yes block away.

The sad thing is that if this goes through it will do so unchallenged by the public (whos going to wave a sign saying i love porn in public - other than us of course ). Another bit of government censorship slips in and another freedom taken away. BUT WE VOTE FOR THEM.

In many ways we have get the freedom we deserve. Our freedoms get taken away while we re-elect the people taking them away.

And just HOW do you suggest they do that? If CP and other illegal sites were so easy to control, don't you think they would all be gone by now?

How does an ISP block something they don't even know exists? Each ISP should hire 100 million tech people to manually monitor and index the entire www every single day. Or maybe all CP sites should be required by law to label themselves or maybe they should all be on a .cp domain. HAHAHA!

I disagree. I don't think they understand the Internet at all. They think the ISP just flips a switch or puts a tick in a check box and magically all of the CP disappears.

The fact is that parents don't want to shoulder the responsibility of watching their kids. They want government to do it for them. They use the computer as a babysitter because they can't stand sitting down and reading their kids a story, or going for a walk, or playing a game.

The longer I live on this planet, the more I believe that child birth should be a legislated act that one must apply to become involved in. If you don't pass the course and the test, you can't get pregnant. Shit, I had to go through more hassle to get a cat from the Humane Society.

    Oh brother ...

I think the other issue is that unfortunately if you are magically able to block the "illegals" i.e. child porn, etc. then what comes next? It all boils down to if you are able and "allowed" to block certain unwanted sites who is making the decision of what is and is not "wanted" to the people that will have access to it?

I can not care any less about with them filtering out sensitive material [slash] porn from libraries and schools, however the nazis have no right to block any material from entering private residencies (homes) - that is up to the home owner or renter!

I do love the idea of offering a censored connection. Maybe then the right wing wackos will finally STFU!

wait a minute - they are all criminals, so why does it matter

and exactly who do I contact about blocking the stupid fucks from entering my home? Oh, I am referring to the father and son crew, Jesus & his pa!
Nothing offends me more than organized religion!

OH they'll never shut up, it's not only that they don't want it available in their homes, they don't want it available anywhere.

I wonder how their spinning the Christian camp counsellor who was recently just caught diddling boys.

Praise the Lord, good to know their propoganda really works.

Yeah, because it's not like you can just... oh, I dunno... NOT look at it?

It's like that lady who sued MySpace because her preteen daughter met some kid through there who raped her. Where the fuck was the parent when her daughter was out running around unsupervised??? I'll tell you, when I was a kid, my mother knew what TV shows I was watching, who I was hanging out with. If I was at a friends, my mom knew their mother, at least enough to make a phone call and check up on me if she needed to. And yes, I was a good kid, but I did sneak in episodes of Benny Hill when they went to bed, some of the books I read were very sexually explicit (for Sci-Fi novels) and yes, I would buy records with my lunch money and sneak them into my record collection. The thing is, my big "rebellion" was practically insignificant but I thought I was really getting away with murder. It's when parents don't pay any attention to what their kids are doing when kids start getting into trouble. It's not the internet or movies or records.
