    Oatmeal!!!

I need help! I'm on the healthy eating kick (and no comments from the peanut gallery about my BLT and waffle fries on Wednesday). And I've been eating oatmeal for breakfast. I like it. I put a little bit of organic sugar in it and it's great. But eating the same thing every day can get a little monotonous. Does anyone have any special way you make oatmeal? I thought of deep frying it but that sort of defeats the "healthy" part. Any ideas?

Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, I've been getting the steel cut, irish organic oatmeal from whole foods and not that pre-packaged instant crap that's full of processed sugar and high fructose corn syrup. The irony is that I never liked oatmeal because that instant stuff always tasted so nasty to me, but this steel cut organic stuff is pretty good.

Oatmeal is the best thing to flavor dude. Try chopping up nutz or fruits into it. Bananas or strawberries are popular. As are apples.

You can also put in some freshly ground cinnamon.

    Crock Pot Oatmeal

Not only is it the best...but if you make it before you go to bed, you wake up 8-10 hours later with the best smell in your house...and the best oatmeal to eat.

1 cup steel cut oats (you can buy at whole foods or similar)
1 cup dried cranberries (or apples, or any dried fruit)
    4 cups water
    1/2 cup half-and-half

In a slow cooker, (crock pot) combine all ingredients and set to low heat. Cover and let cook for 8 to 9 hours.

Stir and remove to serving bowls. This method works best if started before you go to bed. This way your oatmeal will be finished by morning.

DO NOT try to make this with regular flaked "oatmeal" oats. You must use Steel Cut Oats.

Thanks to Alton Brown, of Good Eats for the original idea.

    ENJOY!

Wow, everyone has such good ideas, thanks guys.

Tropixxxx, looks like I'm gonna need to get a crock pot. That sounds great. I have been eating the steel cut variety, I like that the best and it's supposed to be really good for you. I just got this one kind that has a bunch of stuff added like flax seed and grains and stuff. Very nice. But I'll have to try that recipe you suggested.

BTW, checked out your tour. Excellent site. A man after my own heart. :donmike:

I love Oatmeal. I used to eat it all the time when I was working out (see picture thread in main forum:cheerleader: ) Both for breakfast and sometimes for lunch or supper.

Kinda miss it... Cooking oatmeal here in thailand isn't the same..

Lucky for me I'm going back home soon.. oatmeal every day!
