Anyone really paying for ads on Gay.com?

The other day I had a sales rep actually call me from Planet Out, wanting to know if I was interested in a marketing package. So she showed me the location that they are looking for advertisers for their Local Scenes area. So I thought ok cool deal, first time they have contacted me. (and BTW we have tried to market on their site in the past and no one returned our calls or emails).

Anyhow, I noticed some sites on their that I actually know the owners of and emailed them and asked how it is working for them. So far everyone that I emailed did not even know they were listed and are going to get back to me on stats, thinking that Gay.com join the affiliate program for their site. (which is not a bad idea on Gay.com’s part)

I just wanted to know if anyone has "paid" for space on Gay.com and did it work for them?? just wondering, I know I should be pushing them towards the affiliate program, but just thought to throw it out there.

No experience with gay.com but my ex was best friends with someone very high up on rainbownetwork.com (a uk site, 300 to 400 thousand uniques a month) and he always said that the clients never got a decent return on the initial ad, but paid the rates to raise overall awarness of the brand. That plus its tax deductable so didnt cost as much as it seemed. From he used to say, advertising on high traffic sites like that is more a long term thing than a quick "throw up a banner and make a profit".
