The problem with the Atkins die-hards is that a lot of them didn't read the whole book.. just the part about the bacon and the apples.
You actually DO have to have carbohydrates to live, but never at the same time as fats of protiens and will you fucking listen to me? I'm even embarrassing myself now... oh well.
I went on it, I lost 35 lbs in about two months, I had to buy all new clothes, and I actaully get laid now.

Bell,
I first thought that "yes" was the right answer too. However, the more I thought about it I thought not. As opposed to something like smoking, which is an obvious choice for those who do (including myself), not everyone chooses to be over weight. Some do. I think it's a slippery slope to start allowing insurance companies to charge higer premiums because someone is genetically different. People come in all shapes and sizes. I voted NO.

I'm with you on this Rand. I have no problem paying a higher rate because I smoke - it's a choice I made. But I didn't choose to be over weight. For me, I was taking a lot of medicines a couple of years back and it did a lot to cause my weight gain. It's only now that I'm able to start an exercise ans weight loss program. Until this point, medically I could not.
The insurance companies should be PAYING more to assist in wieght loss, not MAKE more because of it IMHO. I worked for a major insurance company for years and what they do to make the money come in and less go out is remarkable. And I was in charge of the money going out so I had a clue
My best,
Gary-Alan

I chose YES...
because people BORN with disabilities often can not
even get insurance... and if they can it's at higher rates
with minimal coverage...
I chose YES...
because obese people and by obese I mean someone 100 lbs. or
more over the doctor charts weight params - I believe that
their medical coverage should be at higher premiums...
AND I also believe that the insurance company should cover
or partially cover things to assist them in weight management
such as: gastro-bypass surgery, gym (with ACTIVE membership),
programs such as weight watchers for one year (longer if results
are derived) etc....
I chose YES...
because even though someone may be genetically predisposed to
being overweight - that doesn't mean that they should be
content with the plethora of health related issues that come
in to play when someone is obese... those health issues
will cost US all more - in order for the insurance companies
to be able to cover the increased medical bills over the long
term for ongoing medical care issues that result from an obese
persons body desease/deteriorization...
having said all that...
I personally as one human to another accept PEOPLE as they
are... and it takes all kinds to make a world... I do not
believe that someone being thin makes them moreso a happy
person than someone not thin... I do NOT believe that all
thin people are automatically healthier than an obese person...
I do believe that there are some completely healthy obese people...
I do not believe that an obese person will remain 100%
healthy over the long haul... as oppossed to that same person
not being obese and otherwise living the same exact life...
those are my opinions...
I also believe obese (over 100 lbs. over national chart params)
should be required to pay for the extra seat (the middle one)
on a plane to be empty to accomodate their overhang... unless
they are travelin with their own family members who will sit
on either side of them and those people don't object...
I know that one will be a sticky subject...
I don't care... those are my feelings..
I don't like it when another human being can cause another
human being discomfort or disadvantage and go unmetered...
Everyone is entitled to make their own life choices..
but they don't have the right to make things difficult
or unreasonably uncomfortable for someone that has no
choice in the situation...
and as for someone in Gary-Alan's situation where meds
caused the weight gain... or a temporary disability...
or broken leg for example causes a weight gain... I do
not feel that someone who's weight goes up for less than
2 years - needs to be charged the higher premium... doctors
health records could verify for the insurance companies
that a particular persons weight had a recent jump...
and I do believe that an insurance company could offer
an incentive of 6 months at the higher rate to start
and renegotiated rate to be lowered if doctors records indicate
weight loss progress at 6 month intervals... steadily
decreasing...
I'm sure there are lots of counter points to what I have
stated as my feelings... but... they are my feelings..
they won't change...

All good points Bell.
I guess it really breaks down to what the parameters would be. Assuming that insurance companies would have rules about being over 100 pounds over weight, or for a period of more than two years, based on what "they" beleive the ideal weight for a particualr individual is, and so on.
It'll be interesting to see how this works out. I personally see it as yet another way for insurance companies to ask for higher premiums and fatten their bottom line by charging more of people with fat bottoms.
