(San Francisco, California) The city of San Francisco is selling the list of names of same-sex couples who wed in the city.

Nearly 4,000 gay and lesbian couples got married in San Francisco after Mayor Gavin Newsom ordered the clerk's office to begin issuing licenses in February. The weddings came to a halt last month after the state Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order.

The list of all the same-sex couples who received marriage licenses was compiled from information the couples put on the license applications.

"They're public documents already and I think they're selling for cost," Newsom acknowledged Monday night.

"We're not marketing the thing; we've made it available for those who otherwise were going to spend hundreds of dollars for someone to go down and do it," he said.

The list will sell for $65 and could be of interest to companies which market products to gay couples. But, it could also be used by anyone wishing to target same-sex couples for other reasons.

Some people questioned on the street Monday night in the Castro neighborhood raised concerns that the list could be used by stalkers or hate groups. The list not only contains the names of those from the Bay Area who married but also gay couples from across the country.

Newsom said that so far only a few people had bought the list.
I agree that this list has the potential to be used by stalkers or hate groups, what the hell are they thinking?

Im all for making some additional money but this is just crazy IMHO
