The industry to make beer money and, how many do you think are in it to actually run a business?
Just had an ICQ conversation with someone and they basically told me that if they didnt make money within 3 months they would leave the industry and that the only reason they started was because they wanted 'to make more money so i can go out and get drunk with my friends' :eek:
Do you think a lot of webmasters look at the 'porn' business this way or is it just a few?

Over the last few years I have seen so many webmasters come and go within a few months. I am always amazed they come in and drop a bomb in content/plugins/hosting/etc and don't even stick it out past the 6 month mark!
But then again, I also have seen a few people go from a $25 hosting account to a $1000/month account within a few months thanks to very very successful marketing and a great set of products! So I can tell ya that it can still be done

I have to admit I started in the industry as a sideline. I'm become more educated and focussed on making money from it, it was originally just a hobby for me. What can I say it wasn't originally a business but it's now becoming that way.

I'm in it to make money, make other people money, have fun and not have to worry about a bar tab, ever.
I suspect beginning webmasters do not realize how much work and learning and time it takes to become profitable. Once you realize it is not fast and easy, you either quit, do it as a hobby, or buckle down to a lot of working and learning, and having fun at the same time!

I think that a lot of the "beer money" webmasters have either
1 - quit after realizing how much work was involved
or
2 - became full-time webmasters & made something of themselves
I don't see as many "beer money" webmasters as I used to. In this regard, the industry has really changed for the better.

I got into it around 8 years ago to make money and a living - hoping to retire (unless GaryAlan spidy senses tell me otherwise)

I think that most on the outside get the wrong immpression when it comes to the Adult Industry. It is not a game it is a business! One that has highly inteligent motivated individuals that are marketing a product no different than selling nickel (my last proffesion)
I think the level of business acumen and competition will weed out the beer money dudes!

I know of at least 3 'webmasters' that are making more selling their sigs for post whoring all day for more than they could ever make a webmastering.
While i think you are right to some extent, i would also repsectfully disagree about the amount of 'beer money' webmasters still around, i just think they have all accumulated in one place instead of actually trying to 'learn' how to build a successful business and, in all honesty, with companies paying in excess of $1500 a month for someone to fly their button who can actually blame them?

i know a large amount of people who would tell you they do this as a business, yet are not making money after a year or two. in fact, i know a bunch of people who are feeding money to their porn business as it drains them.
they feel it is a business, but it is a business that they obviously have not learned to understand.
i also know lots of college aged hobbyists - some who do it for beer money, some who simply like doing it, and are happy to make a couple hundred bucks and hang out at webmaster boards.
First computer that I got, I spent hours, days, months looking at porn. Then I realized that you could actually make money at it. I learned the basics of html (self taught mind you), made a few websites on free hosts, made a couple hundred dollars, and I quit my day job to become a full time adult webmaster. I still haven't made my first million(evil grin) but I'm working on it. I went from making minimum wage to earning unlimited amounts of money.
I have been a webmaster for 4 years and I'm still not at my peek potential. I have lots to learn about marketing and sales. The industry was paying the bills but I've had to deal with various income from month to month and struggle to keep the lights on.
In time, as you mentioned , the beer money webmasters will leave.
I'm in it for the long haul. The rent has to get paid somehow..... :groovy:
southernexposure - most of the beer money guys will be around for a while... i have known a bunch for over two years. they don't pay rent, their parents do.

i started in this industry as a model to make some quick cash to help me through college. fortunately, i was with a group of people who rose to the top of their game rather quickly and appreciated and nurtured my brain and business talents, not just my dick and ass. after my first show (ia2000 in miami) when i saw how much money there really was to be made here, i knew this could be a career.
but the really great thing about ebiz is that it can be anything you want it to be...as evidenced by the variety of responses in this thread. for some people, it is just beer money...and if that's what they want, more power to them. those who want more can have more if they put in the effort. and to the lifers i would say, you can't be successful if you're not able to recognize who's in it for the beer money anyway...so accept that that's all they want out of it and move on with your own business. wasting time worrying over how many people are truly serious in this industry takes time away from doing business with those who are truly serious.
besides, it's a great way to meet chicks right? (winking at aly)
