Transfer Hi8 video to computer - How?

I have a content provider who still uses Hi8 to shoot content and I have the tapes BUT no camera to transfer them to my computer for editing...I really don't want to buy a camera (with that old format of video) just to capture a few minutes of video...anyone have suggestions on how to get these transferred?

    Thanks!!

You can get a Hi8 VHS tape holder thing (yeah... teat helps a lot - heh)

It's a VHS tape with a hi8 insert that lets you play the hi8 on your VCR.

Run AV cords to your video card from the VCR and run your capture program.

You'll need something that will take composite video and convert it. You hook up the hi-8 camcorder's composite video and audio out to the inputs of the card or adapter.

Here is one option that a lot of people use:

    http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSit...o/Dazzle/?dz=1

I haven't personally used it, but it seems to be the one my friends most commonly use.

There's an older, amazing product called Snap or Snappy that had the best capture resolution and very simple software, but unfortunately the company folded when the president unexpectedly died. Sometimes you can find them on Ebay. I have one of those, and have used it to capture all sorts of stuff.

The adapter that IdolKnights was thinking of goes between VHS-C and VHS. That's an excellent solution if you're converting tapes from a VHS camcorder.

    Thanks but...

The problem is that I nothing to put the tape in (no camera)...I convert video all the time BUT with a mini-dv tape format. This is an old format for which I have no camera...if I had the camera no problem at all...

Any other suggestions? Anybody got an old Hi8 camera they can loan me for a couple of days? I'd be more than happy to pay the postage!

    Lee,

You might try Craigslist for either a used hi-8 for sale, or maybe someone willing to rent you one for a day or two. As a last resort, most pro video supply companies rent equipment.

Miami - I was looking on e-bay for shiggles and found a few older hi8 cameras at, under or around $20.00 with AV jacks.

If you already have the video card and pull video, this may be a cheep option for pulling the needed video.

The other thought is Ebay. I'm guessing cameras in that format are pretty inexpensive these days.

Yeah, I use Hi-8 all the time (a lot of old footage I am still using for content). It's a bitch. Hi-8's are cheap. Just go buy one and return it when you are done pulling video. Best Buy charges a re-stocking fee, but then you aren't stuck with an archaic device that you really don't need to use but once.

PS: Tell your content provider to get with the times and shoot on Mini-DV.

I thought of that first...so I went to Best Buy, Target, and Wolf Camera and they only carry 1 model (very Basic Sony) and it doesn't have the connections to hook into the computer!! This format is just too old...arrgh!

If you know of any stores in the L.A. area that have more than the 1 model I would gladly buy it and eat the restocking fee!

Yes, that is a mega store...should have tried that place. Any way, update...found a camera with a usb port at CompUsa online...return within 14 days with the 15% restock fee. Got it ordered...

Thanks again to everyone who had suggestions with this problem!!

    Happy Holidays!
