    HD-DVD Adult Industry's Top Choice?

Is this true? I guess it kindof make sense because of expenses etc. but I have seen alot more Blu Ray dvd's than the HD-DVD when it comes to adult.

When we had a meeting with senior staff at our (now former) replicator, we discussed the HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray thing and one of the big issues for them was investment in replication equipment. Apparently the same equipment that is used to fabricate standard DVDs can be used, with modifications, to fabricate HD-DVD, but completely new replication equipment will be required to fabricate Blu-Ray.

Additionally, authoring for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are *completely* incompatible and so if we want to put out a product in both formats, we will have to go through the entire authoring process twice. It doesn't sound like there is even a way to transcode the authoring from one to the other. You'll be able to reuse assets like images and graphics, but that's about it.

I know Paramount has announced and shown techology that will permit Blu-Ray, HD-DVD and SD-DVD to exist on the same disc, but I'm sure that replication will be enormously expensive.

But... with all that said, Blu-Ray still seems to have the favor of many more of the Hollywood studios than HD-DVD does, and I hadn't even really seen any Blu-Ray or HD-DVD adult titles, so perhaps the jury is more out than this article leads us to believe... or perhaps the writer of the article is on Toshiba's (HD-DVD) payroll

    My personal opinion...

With all the hype about HDTV, high definition this, high definition that... the term "HD" alone is a marketing force. I think HD-DVD will prevail because of its name, not its technology. Average non-techie consumers will see and hear the name Blu Ray for the first time, and they may think of laser surgery, ultraviolet light, whatever they think of... but I'm sure they won't be thinking "high definition!" until someone explains what Blu Ray is and will need to sell them on what makes it better than HD-DVD and why.

It's just like iTunes and iPod. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the new "iPhone" is compatible and works with both of them. It's in the name. No wonder they are fighting Cisco to keep it. Who wants to buy an "Apple Cell Phone" when you can own an "iPhone!"

If adult Blu Ray discs do sell well... it will be because Playstation 3 owners are using their game systems to watch porn.

I have heard alot of rumors that Blu Ray has actually banned porn on the format. Can anyone confirm this? If this is true this is a really stupid move on Sony's part. HD-DVD will have a huge advantage over Blu Ray.

Interesting, especially since a year ago there were articles saying many in the adult industry were going to Blu-Ray.

Almost makes me want to go and immediately re-release all of our titles in Blu-Ray just to say "fuck you" to Sony.

I don't see how Sony can enforce this, unless there's something in the replicated discs that tracks the serial # or manufacturer of the discs... half of the replicators that work for the porn industry have "front" companies that produce all of their adult product (in the same factory, with the same staff) so they can claim with a straight face that their company doesn't replicate porn.

I'm sure the same thing will eventually happen with Blu-Ray... companies doing it out the back door while steadfastly claiming they have no connection with porn.

wellllll... i just today read another article, this one claims that blu-ray will be the winner and that porn studios are all over it... I will have to call our replicator and see if they can get blu-ray replication for us...

every authoring tool i have in several brands supports HD and not blu-ray. i think this is a lot like beta and reminds me of the way they tried to get it to beat out VHS. it cost them tons of money then and it's costing them tons of money now, win or lose.

so far, HD seems to be the winner simply based on the fact i see it out there - a lot - and it's in sony vegas and other programs i own. who knows what will happen but as of right now, i may never have seen a blu-ray video and have seen tons of HD.

    great topic, by the way!
