    What video speed and sizes?

Ok, so we are getting ready to launch a paysite, but we can't figure out what sizes and speeds we should offer up to our members. We have already decided to offer streaming only, no downloads. But how many different speeds should we offer and what speeds??? Any suggestions? We are going back and forth and can't make our minds up. Do we really need to offer as low as 56kb nowadays?

we still have people using our dialup clips, but they are actually 112k because it looks better.

now, to answer the rest, what is the function of your paysite? is it to upsell PPV and/or DVDs or to keep members recurring? and let's talk site niche. is the site a small, rarely seen microniche or a more commonly seen niche?

240x180 @ 28k should be good enough for everyone. You never know, you might still have some dial-up users with 14.4k modems. You wouldn't want them to have to wait too long to download. And you certainly don't want your video screen bigger than a postage stamp on a 19 inch monitor

And of course, the clips should be no longer that 10 seconds long. And you should only encode your videos in the ever-popular Vivo format. And you might also want to make animated gifs for people without video players on their Commodore 64's and Amigas.

It is to keep members recurring. The site is a normal homos fucking homos site, mostly under 30year olds.

We'd like to offer streaming videos ranging from dialup to big full size videos. But say if we do 112k, 256k, 512, 1000, and 1500, is that crazy offering them in so many speeds?

And what about spliting the clips up into segments, so the user can start half way through the video instead of waiting for it to load. Should we do that also? Or maybe just on the largest speed?

You could spend forever and a day trying to encode videos in every format and speed and then cutting them into scenes. But at some point you are wasting energy and time. Just pick a few different speeds/sizes otherwise you'll spend all day every day encoding videos.

is it crazy? no. all the braincash sites offer 5 speeds, i believe, and so do others i've seen. the real issue is whether you can create a page layout that can offer that many speeds without looking lame.

consider the speeds of your users vs what they'd like to see. dialup and isdn users are covered by the 112k. common broadband speeds i'm aware of include 384k, 768k, 1.5mb and faster. i personally don't offer a 256kish speed - i figure at 384k, a little patience gets them a better quality video at 512k. you might see it differently.

the most unusual thing i see on your list is to offer both 1000k and 1500k. i can see a reason for it, though. 1000k loses sharpness when taken full screen at 1024x768 but 1500k still looks purty good.

and cutting up the videos makes sense for you as it can lead to less transfer AND more customer satisfaction. when we had jackoffguys, a lot of members watched only the first and last of the 5 clips.

    windows media and mpg.

they probably use sorenson, which is what i also use to encode videos. sonrenson has batch encoding so you can set up 3 videos to encode in 4 speeds, go to sleep, and when you wake up your videos are ready to go.

Media Cleaner is a compression software that allow you to process videos in a "batch". You can select different sizes and formats and process them all at once. Plus you can monitor what each version will look like.
