    downloadable DVD question

anyone here worked with downloadable DVDs yet? if so, i'm wondering - do the menus on these work? if so, do you just zip up everything and upload it or is there something you have to do?

otherwise are these just DVD size and quality encodes along with the cover art?

Never actually done it, but I assume that you would prepare a downloadable DVD the same way you would produce a DVD master for a replicator... your authoring tool would output an .iso file which, once downloaded, would be opened with Nero or EZ CD Creator or whatever and burned to a disc.

We tried it with a dvd created on DVD studio Pro. We could never figure out how to get it to work. The download would contain all the files needed, and we could burn a new disc that had everything on it...but it would not play in computer or player. I would LOVE to know how you do it if you figure it out.

Are DVD to own programs very popular? I know straight studio Vivid has been experimenting with them, but I would be surprised if they are doing much business. I dont think people want to get so involved and take all the steps for porn, when they can just download it and be done.

Oh, I think people would do it.
Having spent years in the video (Tape) business, I was always amazed at the efforts people would go to when copying videos and making a home library. Now, this was back in the "Olden days" (Circa 1985-1990) before video sell through was reasonably priced.

But I think the idea translates to the modern media of DVD.
Look at the popularity of the DVD duplication programs. And you can buy many movies 45 days old at the local blockbuster for $10.
Adult movies, things people don't want to be seen buying, gets even more attention like this.

I know this is a bit off topic, but I have a question maybe someone could help me with.

How do I get my DVD's onto my iPod Video? Is there a program I can use to copy them to my computer (iTunes)? I know iSquint optomized media files for your iPod, but I can figure out how to get the DVD movies on my compter first. (I have a iMac BTW)

    Thanks,
    D

Once you actually encode the DVD for download (.mpg, .wmv, .avi, etc) the menus on them become inoperable.

Your best bet would be to check out how some of the larger torrent sites handle this, typically what i have found is they take the movie, remove the opening credits, remove the end credits and play it from the beginning of the actual movie which usually works out to around 750-800mb in file size with a really good quality.

As i say, check out some of the torrent sites out there, they usually have some basic tutorials on how to rip DVDs for upload/download which you might also find of some help

The 1 option you can try, if you really must have working menus, is to encode the DVD in flash format and create a flash based menu to work with it, although i think thats going to be a lot more work than is needed.

You need to convert them to mp4 format using a program such as Handbrake then import them in to iTunes then sync your iPod

Okay ive been playing with this for a couple of days and beleive i have found a solution however, it doesnt really lend itself for 'online' use due to the huge filesizes that are involved however, the DVD menus do in fact work if you play the files in a regular DVD player program such as Intervideo.

You should look up a program called 'DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0' what it does is pull the data from a DVD and saves it to a HD where you can then .zip the contents of the folder up and make them available for download, menus and all.

The only problem i see with this right now though is that each 'dvd' works out to over 4 gigs in size but, the original DVD quality is still there.

I have another 50 or so DVDs left to decrypt in this manner and i think im going to throw up a real basic 'bonus' site that i can feed from my members areas on Condom Cash to see just how much interest there is in full DVD downloads.

    Regards,

    Lee

i found sites selling downloadable DVDs and they ARE over 4 gig, Lee.

btw, i suspect that for the most part the people who buy downloadable DVDs are not going to be the same type of people who buy site memberships - they'll be the people who buy DVDs online already or who pay for pay per view...

    Guys,

If you want a downloadable DVD that can be burned to a DVD and played in a DVD player, the ONLY way to do it (short of reauthoring) is to copy the ISO file output by some DVD authoring software and make that available for download.

Once the ISO is downloaded and burned to a DVD, it will function exactly as it was authored to function, complete with all menus, etc.

It will be a large file - the maximum filesize for DVD-5 is just under 4.7 gigs and for DVD-9 it's about 7.8 gigs - but you will get exactly the same thing as you'd get if you were burning a test disc before sending a master out for replication.

Anything else (zipping up .wmv files, etc) will give you files that might be of DVD quality, but without authoring or output using something that makes the DVD playable, you won't have a usable DVD.
