Same Sex Marriage - Here We Go Again...

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Proponents of same-sex marriage have introduced a ballot measure that would require heterosexual couples to have a child within three years or have their marriages annulled.

The Washington Defense of Marriage Alliance acknowledged on its Web site that the initiative was "absurd’’ but hoped the idea prompts "discussion about the many misguided assumptions’’ underlying a state Supreme Court ruling that upheld a ban on same-sex marriage.

The measure would require couples to prove they can have children to get a marriage license. Couples who do not have children within three years could have their marriages annulled.

All other marriages would be defined as "unrecognized,’’ making those couples ineligible for marriage benefits.

The paperwork for the measure was submitted last month. Supporters must gather at least 224,800 signatures by July 6 to put it on the November ballot.

The group said the proposal was aimed at "social conservatives who have long screamed that marriage exists for the sole purpose of procreation.’’

Cheryl Haskins, executive director of Allies for Marriage and Children, said opponents of same-sex marriage want only to preserve marriage as the union of a man and a woman.

"Some of those unions produce children and some of them don’t,’’ she said.

I just dont understand what these people are actually trying to do, i mean, lets just drive an even bigger divide between the gay and straight communities with proposals like this.

I really dont get the gay right-wing when they do shit like this.

    Regards,

    Lee

Actually, it's quite interesting what they are doing. By introducing that law, it shows people how rediculous the argument is of marriage only being a priviledge for couples capable of producing children. That's been a big argument for the anti-same-sex marriage movement for awhile. They seem to jump between GOD and CHILDREN. Well if you start throwing it back in their face and forcing them by law to produce their end of the deal, of course they are going to deny it and say it's rediculous, but atleast it takes that piece out of the argument in the future.

Now... how can they debunk the GOD angle...

The younger the age group, the more support for gay marriage. So it's only a matter of time.

So would they support any hetro marriage being annulled if no children were produced? Of course not, which is proof that marraige is more than the ability to pro create. Maybe thats want they want to show? What will they do if the measure is passed though?

America has to wake up to gay rights. Its ludicrous that in the "most free" country in the world some people are more free and equal than others.

I think it's a brilliant move to put "Defense" of Marriage on the "defense".

I think it was John Waters that once said...

The best part of being gay is that you DONT have to get married...and you DONT have to be in the military!

Now that I can agree with.

Although it would be nice to have some of the same protections as married couples without the hassle of hiring a good lawyer.

Considering the divorce rate in this country I can't see how "sacred" marriage is any more. Not to mention the people living together, unmarried, and still having kids. Its a lot more prominent these days.

I think it's lovely that they put "straight only" marriage supporters on the defensive like this. Instead of us defending our right to marry, they have to defend their right to STAY married.

Previously being in a long term commited relationship with a child I know the importance of Gay marriage, or at least equal rights, as countless others do.

If we keep in the public eye, and keep pushing, it will only be a matter of time until we are granted what the constitution guarantees us, equality. If we don't continue to push, we will not be equal, we will remain second class citizens.

    I think it's brilliant.

    I'm totally behind it.

Showing people how stupid the anti-gay arguements are by hitting them over the head with it.

It really does show how totally stupid the 'phobes are.

I am in a registered partnership (as its called here) and it is wonderful to be able to enjoy the same benefits as the other folks when it comes to things in our daily life. Most important for us, is the tax brakes we enjoy as registered partners, never say no to less taxes

The bad side is that there are only about 30 or so countries that recognize our partnership, most of the E.U. zone and some other countries, making moving to our dream country not so feasible.
