Board Spam Bots Are Getting Smarter So...

From today onwards im no longer allowing any new users to register on the GWW Community with an @hotmail.com email address.

As such, if you currently use a Hotmail address in your profile please change it to something else, preferably an email address for a domain that you own instead of a 'free' webmail account.

Im actually expecting we'll see more 'banned' email addresses over the coming weeks as these board spammers change their tactics again.

Might want to extend that to yahoo as well, it's very easy to create a new account with them. Gmail don't seem to hand out accounts quite so easily though.

I dont hate them at all.

I do however beleive such tools are only as good as the tools using them

Two years ago a forum I manage had no spammers.
All we had to do is send an opt-in email confirmation.

Now..we get about 5 accounts a day that register and reply to the confirmation email. I found out that there are some companies that pay real humans to register to forums and message boards pennies per hour. They get an account and start to send spam. They usre normal .com, .net, and .info accounts.

Bots are kind..but now we have to deal with real humans.
I had to turn off the auto-account and now approve the account by hand. I'm looking for the next protection package to roll out.

Goodness...what will be next?
