Have You Ever Removed Sites Because They Lost Money?

Im just curious to see if anyone has actually closed down any sites they owned that bled money from them rather than actually generated a profit?

If so, when did you determine the point of diminished return was on the site, the first week, month, year?

I have a few sites im looking at shutting down over the coming few weeks and i just wondered if leaving them 12 months was long enough to say 'enough is enough' ?

    Your thoughts?

    Regards,

    Lee

I think it would be smarter to keep them online as static sites and offer them as "bonus free site accesses" to your other members.

If a domain covers the cost of the registry and the hosting bill for a year, anything above and beyond is technically profit. What are you averaging per site for those that sit with Sedo? Also, domains that have sandboxed and have some sort of SE listing can usually grab a better price than those that were purchased and nothing ever put up on them, if you just want to auction them out.

    Bec,

Unfortunately i wish it was as simple as it just being a 'domain' LOL

Thankfully, those i have sitting on Sedo all (so far, touch wood) have broken even within a month or two in terms of cost for the domain.

Im actually talking about things like forums, where an additional $160 is automatically added to the cost of the domain, then you have the design aspect, the bandwidth, marketing, etc.

At what point do you close a site that is costing you more than it is making?

    Regards,

    Lee

I would say shut it down once you realize there is no longer any benefit. If after three months the stats are stagnet, not growing, or in decline, I would say there is your answer.

I've done it with a number of sites. Closed them down and re-developed them. Some of them were mainstream a couple of them were/are porn sites.

One of them it me 6 months before realizing there was no way it was going to fly. :flogging:

Another one, (recently) after 3 years I decided that enough was enough. :flogging:

It had done just fine in the first 2 years but last year it sucked bad. So it's time to re-develop it.

Never done it with a website, but closed down a shop I owned when it didn't make money anymore. It didn't run me into debts, but it was wasted time because I couldn't make enough money to justify the time I was investing in it. Without doubt I would do the same with a website and rather spend my time on more profitable things.

Yes! If it doesnt make money move on. Id give it time, the main thing has to be if its growing. If so will it earn profit at some point and enough to make it worth while. If you fighting a loosing battle, let it go. One of many lessons ive learnt the hard way .
