i have a d-link system that works well for me. never had any problems with it...can work down the hall or outside. should be able to get the router and card for under $150. well worth it to be able to work by the pool!!
I have tried everything, dial-up, phone line high spead broadband, wireless... the best I have encountered is Cable. We have Cox Cable Internet and I love it!
plus you get to giggle everytime you say "Cox"

I have a Linksys wireless router and works pretty well. Have to reboot the modem every now and then.
I have a dedicated hardwired 100mbps LAN, courtesy of my brother the apprentice electrician (gotta be useful for something). It is the fastest I've experienced.
A friend of mine was running wireless in his office but his d-link modem blew up from overuse in only 18 months. I for one like the speed of the LAN but wireless might be an advantage for the laptop, maybe you could have a combination system with any desktops hardwired and wireless networking for the notebooks.
Cheers,
Allan
