You can do interesting, colorful backgrounds that in no way imply younger than 18... anything from colorful furniture to comforters, outdoor settings, etc can contribute to a more interesting scene than one shot in a generic hotel room.
But if you instead choose to take your barely-18 model, dress him up in a middle school uniform, put Algebra 1 textbooks next to him, and Power Rangers or Sesame Street stuffed animals or whatever in the scene, any reasonable person is going to infer from that setting that the kid is underage, or you want people to *think* the kid is underage. That is the line that shouldn't be crossed.
You can argue that it is *legal* but that isn't a battle I would want to fight with Aunt Minnie in Cletusville, TN on the jury. (BTW, I'd make the exact same argument in straight porn for taking a barely 18 girl and dressing her up in a similar way)
Of course, it's up to you. But if you get too close to the line, you invite scrutiny, and you also have a hard time getting affilaites to promote your site.
