Domain Name Question... Why So Cheap?

I was wondering if anyone knew a reason why the .info domain TLD was so cheap to register? I dont think ive ever seen .info domain registrations cost more than $5 in the last few years.

GoDaddy even have them for $1 right now and im wondering why.

Are they really that bad a TLD?

    Regards,

    Lee

Yep... I think though that it is simply not well used... could be a good TLD like ORG if used in the right vein... or maybe it is just too many TLDs ...

It's two things. First, .info has never been as popular as the other main TLDs. When it first launched, everyone had high hopes, but it's never had wide adoption, so sales are sluggish.

Secondly, the floor on .com/net TLDs is effectively about $6-$6.50 because Verisign charges each registrar about $6 per domain as the registry operator for maintaining the registry. I think that Afilias(registry operator for .info) lowered the prices they charge registrars dramatically in order to try and get more registrants.

yup, its all about demand, there is no demand for .info names (I don't own any, do you?) but making them cheaper makes them more appealing.

    cheers,
