more brands of pet food recalled

just so you know, more pet foods are being recalled. alpo and mighty dog chunks and gravy have been recalled by purina, who apparently also bought wheat gluten from china:

and a dry cat food is also recalled - Hill’s Prescription Diet™ m/d™ Feline Dry Food:

I think we've only just seen the tip of the iceberg on this

we put our little schipperke down in July after a month's sudden unexplained illness - she had never been sick one day in her 15 year life and the breed is known to be the longest living of all dog breeds - usually living to a healthy 18-19 years - her diet was consistant of Iams and Mighty Dog throughout her entire life

since she was cremated after death, there is no way to test her at this point in time -

makes you wonder how long these problems have been out there and undetected

next time, the diet will be limited to home made food....

Really does seem to just get bigger and bigger. And it makes me wonder about not only my own dog, but the dogs of friends and family members I knew one who kept having seizures and her owner would wrap her in a towel and warm her up till it passed. Now that that dog is gone, I wonder. The vet had blamed it on flea spray. But even after her owner discontinued use of it, the seizures would happen.

I am so glad I am skipping this but I know my mom has been really worried about it with her puppy. Almost makes you think about dishing out table scraps.

I only feed my cat dry Purina cat food, and from all reports, it's just the cuts-and-gravy food that has been tainted.

My little Masha is doing quite well, I'm happy to say.

my physical therapist told me this morning that her mom and dad just had to put down their 7 year old dog because of this horrible pandemic of nasty pet killer food - they autopsied the dog and it tested positive for that chinese, tainted additives - I hope the manufacturers get fried for this and get stuffed into little cans with easy-pull tab tops !

you know the worst thing is that not everybody is getting the word on this - if you can believe....

You know, after all of this I switched my cat food brand altogether.

I used to feed my cats Science Diet c/d because it's supposed to prevent kidney crystals. It was already pricy at $17 a bag, but I love my cats, so I don't care. When I heard that Hill's m/d was being recalled, I just thought, "That's it, you can't trust any of these big companies."

I talked to a girl at my Vet's office and she recommended FROMM. They're a small, family-run business. The food is made from people-grade meat in and people-quality facility. (Of course they could be lying, who knows.) But she has feed her animals this food for three years and has seen amazing results with the quality of their coats, minimal shedding, etc. And their food isn't made with any binders like wheat gluten.

They're going to cost you more that a $3.99 bag of Nine Lives, but my cats are worth it.

    Cheers

I learned something VERY interesting last week from going to the website of the people (NaturaPet) that make the food I use for my cats.

It turns out there is apparently only ONE canning company in the US (Menu Foods) that produces ALL of the canned cat and dog food sold, by every company. Menu Foods has multiple canning plants that service different companies, but everyone who sells canned pet food has it manufactured by Menu Foods.

NaturaPet has a lengthy video from their CEO in which they indicated why their food is not affected (they don't use wheat gluten in any of their products, and they use a Menu Foods facility where no problems have yet been reported) and they are apparently going to buy or build their own canning plant.

It was luck that I decided to feed my cats the Evo food made by NaturaPet (the breeder recommended it) but having read their comparisions of what's in their food compared with the contents of other food, I'm really glad I made that choice.

If anyone wants to see the video, it's at www.naturapet.com (bottom right)

    IMPORTANT!

This chinese wheat gluten was FOOD grade! And it may be in our food supply. However, the FDA has resisted naming the US distributor of the wheat gluten.

Can we trust that the FDA is really looking out for our best interests? Is the FDA the new FEMA?

Thank you George Bush and your cronies for keeping us safe.

This isn't true. There are some smaller houses that create and package their own food. FROMM has no links with Menu Foods. FROMM is based in Wisconsin. There are a few others, and you can certainly buy canned food that is also produced from smaller houses outside the US, but is available in the US. But Menu Foods does seem to have its hand in every major supplier's business.

Also I'm not sure if Effem Inc deals with Menu Foods. They make Whiskas, Caser, and some other brands. Their food is unaffected by the recall according to their site.
