According to USA Today here

it appears that gonorrhea (which is already at near-epidemic levels among the gay community in some areas) is no longer consistently responsive to Cipro, already a pretty heavy-duty antibiotic. The only remaining antibiotic that works is cyclosporin, which is near the top of the chain of uber-heavy-duty antibiotics.

This means that it's more difficult to treat, and more difficult to get rid of, because cyclosporin is currently only available as an injection, which many doctors offices don't keep on hand. Patients are also less likely to return for follow up treatment that involves injections.

When we as content producers talk about testing and about the risks of barebacking, people generally think of HIV. But increasingly, hep-C, gonorrhea, and syphillis are becoming both common and challenging to treat.

We've been talking about adding gonorrhea to the list of STIs we test our models for (currently HIV, hep-c, and syphillis) and I think that given the new reporting on antibiotic resistance, it may be time for us to start doing that.
