sex ed and abstinence classes article

i just read an article about an article called "Study: Abstinence classes don't stop sex"

now there will be more political arguments and bs from christians who don't really care about facts in this area. and for the rest of us, there was no real surprise that abstinence class doesn't work. but while reading the article, it says that kids in sex ed and abstinence classes have the same number of partners, the same aount of unprotected sex and start having sex at the same age.

so instead of the focus of the article, how would this have been?

Study: Kids in sex ed classes don't start sex earlier or have more partners

then the next time the christian conservatives bring up an attack against sex ed class, there would be a factual study to show that there is no reason to believe that sex ed has the effects they keep claiming - that would help keep sex ed in schools where it belongs, helping kids make decisions about their lives based on facts.

I was never really sure that those worked. I had an abstinance class when I was in 8th grade, so I was 14... Never anything after that... I remember it being like sex is bad, sex causes pregnancy, then going WAYYYYYYYYYY in depth about STD's and how 1 in like 3 people have them, and if you have sex you will get them... blah blah blah... I didn't have sex for the first time till I was 17... almost 3 years later (and trust, it wasnt because of the abstinace class that I wasn't getting any )

I think pro condoms is the real way to teach people. I have ran into a few models under the age of 20 that were positive, and I cannot help but think that if schools weren't so up on abstinance, and were teaching something with some practicality (condoms) that there wouldn't be as many STD's amount our youth.

Never once in my class that I attended was I told ANYTHING good about condoms, but exactly the reverse. We were told condoms can help prevent pregnancy, but that you can still get stds, like warts, herpies, etc.

Hope my rant is making sense... EEEKKKK i typed that fast...

"Kids in sex ed classes don't start sex earlier or have more partners" would have been a great title to the story.

We watched clinical porn in my sex ed class and they separated the boys and girls into different classes, which I thought was odd, because sex ed should educate men about women, and visa versa right?

After being in the class I was no more or less interested in sex and neither were my friends. We just talked about how odd the class was and the video they had us watch :vanish:

Read that article, and what it also says is that the Bush Admin is saying that they need to extend the duration of the Abstinence Only classes. The study claims as well that Abstinence classes did not decrease those kids who did stray from using or not using condoms either. In short, it seems that all the classes did is spend 100+ million for no appreciate changes in the sexual patterns of minors.

I've never known kids to tell the truth about sex.

    of course, the problem is....

when these kids DO have sex, they get pregnant and also get STD's because they weren't taught to have "safe sex" and family planning isn't part of the picture

Bush continues the horrific legacy of sex "unawareness" that Ronald Regan started

when polled, most teens today still assume that they won't get HIV if they don't engage in same sex or "gay" sex - this is reaffirmed by many parents who still assume that HIV is a disease of gays, prostitutes and drug abusers

this is also one of the reasons that the majority of new HIV infections is among "straight" youth 18-25
