Why is today not as good as the "good old days?"

If you could make a thousand bucks a day 5 years ago with liitle work, and today you can't, what's changed? Why is it harder to make it in the adult internet today? What can we do as an industry to bring back the "good old days?"

I wasn't in the biz five years ago as an independent webmaster, but my impression is that low expectations probably made it pretty easy to make lots of money.

I remember when AVS started, you could literally put up a picture and say, "Buy This!" And they did in droves. There was very little out there to see or buy, so when surfers stumbled across something that looked promising, they bought it. It didn't have to be good, it just had to have a cock. We couldn't believe we were seeing naked men on the Web. We didn't have expectations to see good quality pictures of naked men, we just wanted skin.

Now, everyone's giving it away just to get people's attention. There's so much free porn out there and there are so many sponsors competing for the surfer's shrinking willingness to buy. I think the only way you'll ever get "it" back is to get every sponsor to start giving out very little content and for that content to be censored. If the surfers can only see pictures with big yellow stars over dicks, and that's all they can see, they'll have to buy.

But you'll never get most of the sponsors to agree to do this, you'll always have some who will see that as an opportunity to make more money, get more traffic, or whatever, and they'll lure webmasters with uncensored content. And as soon as a few break the ranks, the whole thing will fall apart.

If I weren't in porn, I would probably just buy a few memberships because I can't stand all the endless hunting through crap to get to the good stuff. But there are many millions out there who are titilating by sifting through the endless parade of free sites, TGPs, and the like.

Don't know if this comes as a surprse to anyone, but when Minimum Wage began, it was based on what it cost to house and feed a single person, and they called it a "living wage". That ment, food, rent and transportation could be covered, by a min wage job. In "my day" young people could afford to move out of their parents house before they were 30.

Why were the good old days better?

My personal opinion is, that back then there were Mothers at home to watch over and guide our children. Now we are a society that expects our Gov't to teach our kids everything, that was once a parents job.

That's exactly why I'm here every day when my son comes home from school. We fix 90% of our meals at home and eat together.

I was a latchkey kid. It doesn't work.

So many people are fixed on doing everything at a minimum that they can't do anything well.

Anyway we are off topic, but I TOTALLY agree with you Madame

Yeah, I find it good, too that I have to watch over my customer's computers and their kids and prevent them from viewing porn using dad's or mom's computer which should have a password for security reasons

BUT I honestly would LOVE to just have one day in the "Good Ol Days Of Porn History" - I can not imagine that money was made that easy

You are so right! I have been saying it for years now, but everyone laughed at me. Or was told you have to do it to make the sale. Plus now their are thousands and thousands of websites. xtube also is a good way for surfers to get off without spending any kind of money, along with Blogs.

We should think about going back in time and making all the tours G or R rated, but lets get real here no one is going to do it or be the first to do it.

    Dont be so sure

I have some drastic changes happening on Condom Cash over the next few months, i think a few people are going to be unhappy with some of the changes but its going to make the program (and the sites) stronger for everyone in the long run

Well, I think it depends on what you mean by "not as good."

If you're talking strictly business, then to me, it's perfectly obvious why it's harder to make it today: TONS OF COMPETITION.

Six years ago, you could start a new site with an investment of $600 and build it into a major Web destination for hot content, but now, with SO MANY people having gotten into the industry, it's much harder to deliver fresh new content on a regular basis and still pay all your bills. A lot of these new sites have capital behind them. You can't start with $600 anymore. You have to have at least $25,000 to $50,000 PER SITE if you want to really make it worth people's membership fees. It's all about being able to deliver content updates at least once a week, if not twice, three times a week--or more. Unless you have the backing to keep you running, it's hard to keep that content coming.

What's more, a lot of models have become and are becoming more business-savvy at an increasing rate. They are starting to ask for more money (which, to be honest, they deserve) and in some cases, striking off on their own to try their hand at building their own sites. Luckily, there are always 20 more porn hopefuls springing up in their place, but it's not long anymore until they figure out the way it works too.

In terms of content, I honestly think that a lot of webmasters have lost their passion for what they do. It's just a job to them now--a way to make money, and to me that is the WORST possible way that you can view making pornography. Porn was never about the money in the early days. Never. It was about something revolutionary. It was about sexual expression. It was about connecting to a higher consciousness where sexuality was a tool for liberation. People who did porn in the early days did it because they LOVED it, not because they wanted to get rich. There were a few here and there who were money-mongers, but by and large, the porn community was one devoted to getting people off by tapping into their secret desires. It was a way to connect with people in a way that society had told us was not appropriate. So it was a rebellion of sorts.

Today, the innocence is gone. With the exception of Joe Gage, who is still making hands-down THE best porn being produced today in the gay market, not many folks are putting the TIME and THOUGHT and CREATIVITY into their content anymore. The scenarios are tired and overused; the actors look wooden and stiff; and the directors are just taking their pay checks and calling it a day.

I get TONS of porn delivered to my doorstep every week--at least 8 to 10 titles--and so little of it has any effect on me whatsoever. It doesn't hold my interest because it's just the same shit that everybody else has been doing or is still doing. I want originality; I want daring; I want an individual VOICE. I want hot seductions that engage me intellectually. I want authenticity. And, more than anything else, that is what is lacking in 85 to 90% of today's porn. There's simply nothing that sets it apart from what others have been doing--and doing better--for the past 40 years.

Porn is entertainment, and GOOD entertainment is inspired and defined by how much CREATIVITY goes into it. So if we really want to get back to the "old days" of porn, then I think we need to remember to have reverence for what we do and treat each sex scene as if it's the first one that's ever been put on film. Only then can we escape the "been there, done that" mentality of so much of today's content--and get back to making our customers truly happy.

I've never understood people who are reasonably well off who have kids and then ignore them. What was the point? Because it's just the thing to do once you're married?

Well lets look at this in a couple ways.

By the age of 14 I was the boss of myself and my familly. (long story feel free to ask me in private) My word was law and I did what I wanted when I wanted. I learned by wacthing other people, so I made sure that I would be better in away.

    hrm.

I seem to have confused even myself.
