Building a wall in Iraq ~ thousands protest

"Despite the daily attacks across Iraq, thousands of Iraqis took to the streets Monday to protest a concrete wall surrounding Adhamiya, a Sunni neighborhood in Baghdad.

The U.S. and Iraqi militaries say the wall is a temporary structure to prevent insurgent attacks.

But many Baghdad residents fear walls will exacerbate the sectarian divide that is fueling the insurgency in the Iraqi capital. (Watch why the wall was controversial )

"The aim of this wall is to isolate Adhamiya," one resident told CNN. "It's a step we think that is not for the good of the people, but it's to isolate them like Falluja and other Sunni cities."

Police estimated 7,000 Iraqis peacefully took to the street to voice their disapproval with the wall around Adhamiya, a Sunni enclave surrounded by Shiite neighborhoods.

Video showed the streets crowded with demonstrators, some carrying banners that read in English, "No to the sectarian barrier."

While it is a known insurgent stronghold, Adhamiya has also been the target of Shiite death squads.

On Sunday, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki expressed outrage, saying "the construction will stop." FULL STORY

    --------------------

What the fuck? Bush sure likes building his walls even when Iraqis don't want it and their prime minister says the construction will stop!

Being in Australia I get a different perspective on the news... how are people in the states taking this kind of stuff?

Why are people in the states letting this all continute? I don't understand.

Funny how a lot of people think that the solution to not liking the neighbors is to build a giant wall.

Oh, wait, I was thinking about the Minute Men people who want to build a wall here.

    Or was it Gaza?

    No, wait, Berlin....

Hmmm come to think of it, I can't come up with one wall that actually solved a problem!!!!!

Who is building this wall and at what cost?

They'll probably get millions to build a cheap concrete wall that will be torn down the day after we leave.

The great wall of china may have worked, but it is a little extreme.
I guess I am a little lost, I thought we were fighting in all of these countries trying to tear down walls not building them.
    It's not easy being gullible.

The really sad thing about all of this was that Sen. Joe Biden said a couple of YEARS ago that this is what we'd have to end up doing, splitting the country back up in to the 3 sections in order for there to be some sort of peacefull resolution to all of this and he was pretty much called crazy by the Bush Administration and everyone else.

Now it seems 2 years on, exactly what he said needed to be done, is getting done.

Its unfortunate but i really do believe we have fucked that entire region up, not just the U.S by the way, every country that went to war on the premise of WMD, terrorist ties, freedom, democracy, or whatever else was said to get countries to field troops over to Iraq.

Its going to be centuries before Iraq gets anywhere near as stable again as when Saddam was in power, yes he was a tirant but he knew how to control those people, something that we seemingly do not.

Its going to end badly, look at Isreal and Palestine and how almost every day we hear of new suicide bombings, shootings, etc, Iraq is going to be just like this for many many years to come even after the coallitions eventual withdrawl of troops. In fact i would go so far as saying that not one person on GWW will be alive when some kind of stability returns to that region of the world.

    Regards,

    Lee

After we leave Iran will have ultimate control of that country, this is precisely the reason they've been medling since the beginning.

The unfortunate thing is that Bush is so pic headed he didn't get us out at the right time, and now, the U.S. and it's allies will be blamed for fucking up the region, when in reality, it was Iran.

Bush didn't get anything he wanted out of the war other then Saddam dead. The Reps. are pissed they didn't get their oil ha ha ha
