What (If Any) Charities Do You Donate To On A Regular Basis?

For the last few years we have made it a point to donate a few grand to some of our localized gay/aids charities at the end of the year however, this year i think rather than giving all our charitable donations to the same 2 causes that we're going to spread it around a little.

With that in mind, do you folks have any charities you would recommend we consider adding to our list, preferably non 'gay' related charities as we have those already.

    Regards,

    Lee

    Immigration Equality

    http://www.immigrationequality.org/

Immigration Equality is a national organization that works to end discrimination in U.S. immigration law, to reduce the negative impact of that law on the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV-positive people, and to help obtain asylum for those persecuted in their home country based on their sexual orientation, transgender identity or HIV-status. Through education, outreach, advocacy, and the maintenance of a nationwide network of resources, we provide information and support to advocates, attorneys, politicians and those who are threatened by persecution or the discriminatory impact of the law. Also the Uniting families act.

I don't give to any charities. I directly support a youth program in the Philippines that a friend of mine runs (a retired straight married military friend). I've visited the facilities a number of times and sponsor a brother and sisters college education there as well.

I've found that giving to charities you just don't know where your money is going and how much is going to the cause at the end of everyone getting their cut.

I lost a lot of faith in charaties over the last 10 years. Not all, but several that I thought were rock solid really have some problems.

All Children's Hospital (They do a lot of Children's Cancer and Burn victims)

We also spend close to 5K throughout the year to buy toys and around Christmas time, we drive them to Hospitals and give them to the Kids wards.

As a kid, nothing sucks more than being in the hospital on Christmas.

We are partners at HRC. Other than that, we keep it local. Denver Zoo, Habitat for Hummanity, Northern Colorado Aids Project, etc.

However, one of the most rewarding has been this one:

    www.kiva.org

Technically, it is not a charity, because you are LENDNING them the money...but Matt and I get tremendous personal satisfaction from this one.

Here is our lending page at KIVA if you want to see some of the people we have helped out:

I helped advertise and gave what I could to Noah's Wish. They rescue animals during war times and after weather disasters like Katrina.:heartu:

You are welcome. It is really cool. And one of the nice things is that you get paid back in 6-12 months. You can then withdraw the funds from Paypal, or roll it over into a new venture.

Besides the obvious upsides of really helping someone out, if you do not get paid back, it is THEN a tax write off as bad debt.

www.Kiva.org is a great group. I believe the gentleman that invented it won the Nobel Prize for Economics a while back. Micro-finance is the wave of the future. By banding together with others around the world we can make a huge difference.

I hope you look into it and start to lend.

we donate cash and services* to a number of service based organizations around the country - these range from clinics to homeless shelters - we also donate DVDs, memorabilia and again time (in the form of personal appearances) to a fund raisers

*services - time for design and consultation - this has been valuable to the agencies and programs that don't have the resources to hire expensive consultants such as ourselves - this is the most rewarding of gifts for us - although our time is not tax deductible - who cares when you are doing good!

I send monthly donations to The Hospital for Sick Children as well as the occassional donation to local womens & childrens shelters.

I'm actually toying with the idea of having a "Naked Lady Party" and donating all of the unswapped items to a woman's shelter.
