Application to Download all Patches/Updates for Windows

    Hi,

I just chatted with someone on ICQ and he was about to format and install his windows to his machine - I told him to apply all patches and install a virus scanner prior to accessing the internet the first time - he was like "how am I supposed to do THAT now"?

    Here it is: http://www.heise-security.co.uk/articles/80682

Heise is a VERY respectable computer magazine here in Germany so the script SHOULD work like a charm - they also have forums.

    Hope this makes one's day

if you buy a new computer from any reputable dealer, they will have preinstalled the latest patches upto about 1-2 months ago (depending on their last build date and how much stock turnover they have). Connecting to the internet and running a Microsoft Automatic Update to get the latest patches in extremely safe. Then install anti-virus and anti-spyware tools, if they have not already been installed, and you will be all set.

And then all these should automatically update and keep you safe. It only starts to get unsafe if you disable the auto-update features.

    cheers,
    Luke

True, but if you start from scratch you should not ride the net bareback

Twenty minutes. That's how quickly an unprotected computer can become infected on the internet, according to research institute Sans.org.

Ryan Purita, a consultant with Totally Connected Security Ltd., wanted to see this for himself. He hooked up a PC with default Windows settings to the internet: It had no anti-virus software, no firewall, and no operating system patches. In about one minute, says Purita, it was hacked, infected, and it had started propagating viruses to other computers. Purita recorded what happened in a video [RealVideo runs 2:00].
