How Do You Research New Niches?

When you are planning on launching some sites relating to niches you havent promoted before, how do you go about researching them?

I have to admit, i primarily use Google to find related sites (where possible) then ill hit up DonMike and ask what he knows about certain things LOL

I just wondered how the rest of you researched niches you havent had any experience in before?

IRC should have a room for EVERYTHING and if it doesn't, open the room and sit back.

The best way to understand a niche is to talk to people into the niche. Find out what they like about it and then read between the lines.

Not that I research niches but having a personal fascination with fetishes I tend to use Yahoo Groups to explore things. A lot of the sites have become spam farms now but there are some that are still very active and the people there are usually happy to talk about their interests and answer questions.

And yes, having a wide variety of interests I have been known to be the wise old sage up on the hill for people looking for fetish info. LOL!

My niche sites have always come from personal interraction... If I like it I just assume I can find another few thousand peeps who will feel the same way and hopefully some of them will pay to see it on a site

It may not be the best research but it means I always have sites that I love to look at!

i go to print mags if possible - then online discussion groups and talking to people. search google and see how many pages there are about the keywords relating to the niche. check adwords to see approx how many hits a day those keywords get. once in a while i just get an idea for a niche that seems very good and i go with it.

so what i do (now only in nn) is make an avs site and post galleries. i can see easily how much traffic the gallereis listed by description get, and how much traffic my very niche specific links send. or put up an adwords ad and see how it sends compared to its impressions.

i once bought 8 sets of girls with freckles from ounique and discovered that freckled girls did great - and with no resaerch at all. and solo grandpas - guys over 50 and over 60 - also got very good traffic.
