Im looking at a proposal someone just sent me to do some exclusive retro style content using an old model camera and some not bad looking models to do a couple of retro style porn shoots but im wondering if it would be easier to cut out the middle man and shoot this stuff myself?

I mean, in reality, all that would be needed would be an old camera and some place to process the film wouldnt it?

Your thoughts on this, could this be a way to produce original vintage gay content that would pass for retro in the eyes of the surfer?

You could probably find a "retro" plugin for photoshop that will mimic Kodachrome or Ektachrome.

Same for video, and there are definitely some gamma filters and noise filters you can use to simulate old 16mm film.

The purists will be able to notice the difference, but I doubt anyone else will.

When you say Retro, what decade are you talking about? The looks change drastically over a short amount of time.

40's 50's - lot of black and white
60's - grain and high red/yellow saturation
70's - bring on the betamax

- Untrimmed pubic hair

- Actors with hairy chests and butts

- Tube socks with colored stripes at the top pulled almost to the knee

- Really tight faded 501's (ripped in strategic places is an added bonus)

A bit off the subject, but a couple years ago I went to a screening at the gay film festival of a new movie shot with an antique hand-crank camera from the turn of the century. It was shot to look exactly like an old silent film. At the Q&A afterward, everyone was blown away by the attention to detail in filming, but the filmaker finally confessed that when it came to editing, he edited with iMovie...

Lee, this can be done without shooting on an old cam, I'm pretty sure. I know Wash West shot "retro" porn for Seven Deadly Sins: Gluttony. He told me what kind of cam it was, but I forget now.

Also, authentic clothes and hairstyles from the time period and music that fit the '70s porn would also be essential to making this kind of content successful.

I actually dig the way gay men looked in the old '70s films. More natural bodies and a more rugged, natural masculine look. Not so picture-perfect, prissy and self-conscious. We rented (sight unseen) a vacation house that we were planning to shoot a bunch of scenes with our models.

Unfortunately, not only was the place not at all as represented, but it literally looked like it came *right* out of 1974, down to the orange shag carpet, wood paneling walls, vintage burnt orange sofa and matching chairs, and avocado and coppertone appliances.

So AJ made some calls, got us a refund on the one house, and found us another... but the funny thing was, we had a model who *also* looked like he walked right out of 1974, so we decided that if we ever decided to shoot retro porn, we'd have both the location and at least one of the models we needed.
