Paris Hilton could be paid as much as one million dollars for her first television interview following her release from jail next week, according to reports today.

US television network NBC has reportedly won a bidding war to secure an exclusive chat with the heiress, who is serving a 45-day sentence for driving on a suspended licence following a drink driving offence.

The New York Post quoted sources that said NBC News had promised to pay up to one million dollars (500,000 pounds) for the interview with Miss Hilton, who is due to be released from the Century regional detention centre in Lynwood, California, on Monday.

Rival network ABC is said to be angry at the arrangement, the Post reports, as it considered the socialite would grant her first interview to Barbara Walters, who is friendly with the 26-year-old's mother, Kathy Hilton.

Ms Walters has already spoken to Miss Hilton via phone during her time in jail.

According the Post, the interview will be conducted by NBC's Meredith Vieira after Miss Hilton objected to “disparaging” remarks about her made by her co-host Matt Lauer.

Neither NBC News nor ABC News have yet commented on the report.

Meanwhile, the 'celebutante' has received over 5,000 pieces of fan mail since she was sentenced to 45 days in jail.

In a reply to one of the letters, obtained by entertainment channel E!, the 26-year-old thanks a fan for writing to her "at such a difficult and scary time". She added: "I read your letter and just wanted to thank you for your kind words of love and support," , penned in child-like handwriting with the word "recieved" (sic) misspelled.

The letter continues. "But I am being strong and trying to make the best out of the situation. And the letters I’m recieving (sic) really do put a smile on my face as I sit here in my cell, sad and alone. Again, thank you so much and may God bless you and your family.” She signs off, “Love always, Paris Hilton,” dotting her i’s with hearts and adding “xoxo” at the end.

She has received so much fan mail that prison authorities called Miss Hilton's manager, asking her to come and collect nearly two dozen boxes of letters.

Miss Hilton is allowed one hour outside her cell every day to shower, exercise, watch television and answer phone calls.

The heiress served only three days of her sentence before being controversially freed but was immediately ordered back to jail by a judge. She is expected to be released on Monday

All this girl did was get caught driving drunk and then get caught driving illegally without a license and shes going to be paid one million dollars for her first interview when she gets released Monday.

Is this really the type of person we want the next generation to grow up admiring?

This is the sort of shit the younger generation is going to start thinking is acceptable, what is the media thinking paying this lazy, backward, spoilt slut 1 million bucks for breaking the law for?

In the past month, I have talked to at least 3 or 4 of our models who, for some inexplicable reason, think Paris Hilton is a goddess. They think it's wrong that she is in jail, and for some reason put Paris on a pedestal as someone to be admired.

When questioned, none of them can offer any justification for this, just saying that "she's wonderful."

Something is seriously fucked up with today's youth.

She's a perfect product of American way of life and I'm amazed why most of the people are dissin' her. These are the values that are implemented in a modern society. So why wonder?

It's not like parents are teaching their children to grow up poor, live on the welfare, that it's not cool to appear on tv, that beauty peagants are stupid... This is exactly what America is: society that is built on capitalistic values.

If news stations like CNN or NBC are willing to stop all press to report about her going back to jail, that speaks volumes. This is news. This sells. And this is what we're suppose to be interested in.
