Your Thoughts On Mailing Ex Paysite Members?

I just wondered what you folks thought about this, is it 'fair game' to send a monthly email out to ex-paysite members as long as there is an opt-out link?

I know that most of the large PPS programs do this to their members but i was wondering what you folks thought about this as a business practice? Im actually in two minds about it, one aspect says that once the member has 'left' my site, i shouldnt email them but the other says if they agreed to getting mailed as per the sites T.O.S then it should be fine.

What do you folks think, do any of you mail your ex-paysite members?

    Regards,

    Lee

    I am opposed to it.

Frankly the possible return wouldn't outweigh the negative advertising it could create.

As to the TOS, once a member leaves, I doubt that the TOS would apply, unless it specifically mentioned that mailings would require a separate cancellation.

    my 2 cents

Monthly seems too often to me. Once every 3 months would be okay.

its borderline harassment - but here are my thoughts.

offer them the opportunity to opt out of the mailing list - and if you get an email, make sure they are off of it. I would recommend monthly emails so as not to draw too much notice to yourself and piss them off even more.. most can handle a one a month - but make sure that in the email there are strong reasons for them to return - new content, hot action etc. create a feeling and family - remind them why they signed up in the first place

I think that if your TOS state that by joining the site, they agree to receive occasional mailings from you, you're covered... many Internet companies automatically add you to their mailings after you place an order from them... but you should definitely offer a simple means to "opt out" from that list in each mailing you send.

If you do that, I don't think there's any legal or ethical issue.

I don't remember 100% and can't find a link to any info but back when the Bush/Edwards election was running... I was getting phone calls from "Celebrities" in a pre-recorded message telling me who to vote for Edwards.

In FL, as you know, a company needs to list their number on the id as well as you cannot blind call people through an auto dialer.

When I looked into it a little more, there was something like a 6 month grace period where you can send mail or call people who did business with you. As well as if it's within the terms, so can their business partners.

so "Fair Game", yes, but only for an X amount of time.

Once a month is fine esp if you include site updates. Funny some of the majors are the WORST offenders! 1 or 2 times a week to an ex customer, give me a break! As a customer I used too skip around on the monthly subs (I know that is Hated) but you do go back to the best and a monthly update got my attention!

Crazy not to take advantage of it. But I wouldn't recommend weekly or monthly mailouts. But if you're not mailing each ex-member at least once, you're missing out on a boatload of sales.
