I Wonder? Help please! How to edit a mpg video?

I have a problem to edit a video which I received on a DVD in mpg format. I edit videos with Premiere and usual you need raw avi files as source.
I can import the mpg file, but it is nearby impossible to edit this video. The preview is very jerky!
Anyone have a solution for this problem? Month ago, I tried to convert a mpg back to avi, but this also didn't worked out because of many lost frames.
    Have a nice day,

MPEG is a lossy compression format, it doesn't actually store each individual frame of video, so when you edit you can end up with a jerky look.

You might try transcoding it to AVI or Quicktime format first and then editing that, but you may end up with conversion artifacts even by doing that. This is one of the reasons why the makers of editing software generally don't recommend working with MPEG files for editing purposes.

Thanks for your reply! Well yes, all what I also know about. So there will be no way and I have to go through the hell and edit it in this way. (not really edit, more like cut where I think and put somehow together. I hate work like this!)
At least the rendered clip is playing smooth.

    ...and cut :scissors:

If you're only trying to split up the files, you might try Boilsoft MPEG splitter
    http://www.boilsoft.com/

I don't personally use it, but I know a lot of other people who use it and like it.

No, no, no. I have to edit the video. What I like to say is, that I usual edit very perfect and accurate. But with this mpeg stuff it is not possible.
But many thanks for the link. Maybe some day it will be useful.

You may use DVD Shrink and TMPG Encoder or something else.
