    elitist, presumptuous or forthcoming

Elitist being a select few people you submit tools and techniques for business and success. Knowledge of programming, trending and information geared to a quick and reliable answer.

Presumptuous in that you would publicly state an answer or tip but feel there are people who you would rather not have the hand up, knowing what they may do with the info. (Elitist in a way, but refrain from offering public service because of one or two people)

Forthcoming: You offer information on anything at anytime to anyone.

I keep looking at the triangle scale and can't put my finger on one point. I'm a bit of all three.

I'm an elitist with some information based on a trust and respect level. I'm presumptuous in that some information shouldn't be said public because of the all eyes aspect and some things are not for all eyes. And I'm forthcoming in information I know to be a bore to some and sets a foundation for others.

But this also got me thinking about perception from peers.

    Example:

If GWW was to enact a private section with limited access, those without access would accuse elitism on the section owner and it's members because they are left out of the loop.

    Section examples: Program owners only

The only real arguments would be the community aspect of the site. Where hording information from select people would break the community mold, creating an us and them.

But I think I just went into a strange direction to kind of ask, how much information do you withhold because you know who reads the forums or assume, reads the forums? or are you simply forthcoming with your information without much thought as to who might read it?

I think, for myself, that I am always thinking of who is reading, though not in the way perhaps you are talking. I share what I know, if I feel its of help, irrespective that some who might benefit are either in competition to me, or simply not on my 'like' list.

I think of who is reading, or might be, simply to insure that what I do say is accurate, and clearly expressed, so that if this was say a newbie board where most were new to the business, then in using terms I would incude a brief explanation. Example being SEO. I would on a newbie type board include SEO (Seach Engine Optimisation) so that the letters made sense.

Im pretty much willing to help anyone who asks for advice on how to do something that i know about, be that working a members area to help retention and profitability, through to where to buy content or who to go to in order to get good hosting.

The problem i have is with the people who take the advice, then decide to do nothing with it or decide that what they are being told is wrong or not what they wanted to hear.

I recently spoke with someone about a tour that had a bunch of traffic leaks on it, not on a page off the tour, but actually as part of the tour itself, links to specific movie titles from TLA, links to penis pills, links to VOD providers, on the first, second and third page of their tour.

I told them they should probably cut these links out completely but they didnt listen and went ahead and launched anyway with these.

A few weeks later, they decided that what i told them was right and all of the links were removed and subsequently, they got more people promoting their site and made more money from the same levels of traffic as they had prior to removing the links LOL

Sometimes, just because something *sounds* wrong, it doesnt mean that it *is* wrong

The other thing to take in to account when helping someone on the boards is, just because the person you are helping with your immediate reply may be an asshole, days, weeks, months, years down the line, you might end up helping someone else and not even know about it so offering advice and information on the boards, is a gift that keeps on giving

    Regards,

    Lee
