You do realize by 'gay' I mean a man who has sex with other men?

I Wonder? Adult Industry Publications / Magazines

Was just looking at the various print publications available to webmasters in the adult industry (wel the two i knew of) Klixxx and AVN and wondered how many of you guys actually have a subscription to either of these magazines?

If you do, what is the thing that attracted you to the publication initially and also, how do you rate the magazine overall?

If you dont however, why not? What would make you subscribe to something like Klixxx or AVN?

I have heard people say that these two magazines are to 'commercial' for their liking but that the articles and news peices contained in them are worth reading.

Personally i look forward to getting our copies of boht magazines each month as there is inevitably some news or information contained in them that i missed from the last month or so.

So, how many of you do subcribe to these magazines and, if you could, what one thing would you change about them?

    Regards,

    Lee

I get both of the publications and look forward to them. I actually enjoy the ads. I like to see what everyone in the industry is up to. The articles are great, I've learned a lot from the over the years.
In addition, they help in buiding the "adult webmaster community." Just one more tool that validates us as a vaid industry.

well AVN started sending me their magazine even though i didnt ask for it, because they got my info from the Internext registration.

KLIXX started sending me their magazines even though i didnt ask for it, because they got my info from their parent company, which runs some affiliate program.

it took me four months to get off both their mailing lists, and then when internext rolled around, guess what, im back on for AVN.

as far as im concerned theyre both just a waste of paper with nothing but ads, and they have no respect for people's privacy.

i finally gave up on AVN and a letter from my attorney got them to leave me alone. ive since learned not to register for internext with my real address.

I am subscribed to both and eagerly read them...cover to cover every month. (Also AVN magazine, as well as Video store Magazine.)

I am somewhat biased though. I am a regular writer for each of the ones you mentioned.
But honestly, if you are serious about your business how could you NOT want to read about what's happening and possibly, just possibly learn something?
Kathee Brewer, the tech editor for AVNOnline writes a large portion of their articles. Not only is she incredibly smart, she knows how to write, and she knows how to write an instructive article that actually explains something in a way the layman can understand.

I'm a little offended by people that say they have no value. Sure, they have lots of ads. EVERY magazine has that. That's the way you can get a 200 page 4 color process paperback book delivered to your house for free every month. otherwise, it would cost you $30. Here's a trick; turn the page. But even the ads tell you something, don't they? The people that are running full multi-page ads every month, month after month, are apparently doing something right. Since they have the money to buy the ads. The smart business man would look at what they are doing and learn.

The foolish man looks at a closed book and says "awww there is nothing of value in that book. I know all I need from looking at the cover."

    yes, i have issues.

i have issues with people sending me magazines that i didnt ask for. at the time i lived in a small town and the guy who delivered my mail was someone i did volunteer work with. thanks to AVN and KLIXX showing up one day in black wrappers, looking like some porn magazine, i lost my volunteer work.

if i wanted the whole town to know i sold porn, i'd tell them. i dont need it showing up in my mailbox uninvited.

    Well-
Sounds to me you are ashamed of what you do? maybe you shouldn't go to conventions? You don't get upset when you receive those Columbia house buy 12 and get 1 free offers do you?

'cause, you know, some people are offended by that weird Rock 'n Roll stuff, and they might get the idea you like it or something by analyzing your mail. I'll bet that guy was mad HE wasn't getting the magazine. And I'm sure he never looked at a playboy, or slowly clicked past the blue channel.

Lost your volunteer work? How does that happen? what were you doing there, painting the church or something? it's VOLUNTEER WORK, right? So, who was the one with the problem there......you, or the postal worker that violated federal law by disclosing your mail? Did you file a complaint, or was THAT kind of behavior OK?
I don't know, but to me, any kind of "Volunteer" organization that judged me by what came in my mailbox wouldn't be worthy of my time.
Your problems are more about you being you. Not the magazine(s). Don't blame the magazines because you are ashamed of your thoughts.

I'm not gay, but I certainly don't have a problem talking to, or doing business with Gay people. (In fact, sometimes I think Gay people have a little better attitude on life.)

Oh No...I just thought of something else....you better be careful. Somebody might track your IP back to who you are and discover you are posting on a Gay webmaster Board. will that be the cable/telecom's fault for running a wire into your house? "cause everyone knows, anything on the internet must be porn, just like anything that comes in a black wrapper. Oh, and by the way? Klixxx doesn't COME in a black wrapper. It comes in a white/Manila envelope. Even after all this time I don't recognize it until I look closely or open it.
And watch out for those bankers......if you are running a a gay website, they are liable to find out from those electronic deposits. they might tell someone and you'll lose your free checking.

damn emporer, you love tearing into me dont you? your entire post is mocking me and i think its incredibly unprofessional. i was merely describing a problem i had with the way avn & klixx send out their magazines unsolicited, and the problems it created for me. you tore into me as if i am some bitter fag who blames the magazines for the way the world thinks. i dont, the magazines have a business to run & thats great.

i simply stated that i thought it was wrong for them to mail me porn magazines without my authorization.

as for the mail guy.... he happened to be the head of the organization i volunteered with. while i agree he is a closed minded jesus freak, he did nothing illegal. and yes, it sucks that people are so closed minded, but thats life. im not ashamed of who i am or what i do, but i dont really see how its anyones business. should i go run tell the little league soccer team i help coach that i sell gay porn? why dont you explain that to the 8 year olds for me since you dont seem to think its a big deal.

as for your last paragraph, now youre just being an asshole taking cheap shots and mocking me even more.

Well, I agree I did take it to extreme. More to make the point than have it directly "AT You" as it were......

Kind of like "see how silly this sounds?" So what you took for mocking, was actually me juxtaposing the current "no-no" with what appears to be a silly "no-no" now, years after it's been accepted.

But you didn't simply say you didn't like them sending them....what you specifically said was:

Now THAT I took personal, as I'm one of the guy that writes the words they put in between the ads. And I think you'll find the mail guy did violate the rules of conduct of the US Postal system. In fact, if the postal inspectors knew about it, he would be canned without question. What he did is open the USPS up to liability, in that you could sue for invasion of privacy/defamation. Content of mail IS protected. I'm sure it would be splitting hairs, but I'm just as sure he would get fired for something like that.

However if you are looking for offense, I can tell you I have contempt for people that are afraid to be who they are for fear of society's prejudice. I get even angrier when that person then blames a third party because they didn't know they were supposed to hide for him.

I'll bet you DID give them permission to send you the magazine though. Did you READ the agreement you signed upon entry to the show? Not only that, but you paid for entry, and they felt they were giving you value for your money.
As for Klixxx, as I said, that magazine could never be confused for porn from the envelope. And I think not from most covers either. In any event, try to remember when you insult an organization, any organization, that the organization is made up of people, and people take offense when they are called "a waste of paper." And no one is saying walk around with a banner that says "gay porn purveyor."
When you open a business to the public, by default it becomes "everyone's business." You hung a shingle out that says "open for business." Can't have your cake and eat it too.

You say you receive "AVN" Is that "AVN", AVNOnline" or both? If you are a web adult company, you REALLY need to be getting AVNOnline Magazine.

Just a suggestion.....but I would STRONGLY suggest you make that EXACT...read EXACT request to Klixxx.
    But I'll warn you in advance....if you want them to send you their magazine, let me explain how the trade magazine thing works;
"Boxholder" ain't gonna cut it for qualification on trade journals. Trade journals are generally provided as a no charge item to qualified industry people. To maintain their status as a trade journal, you have to qualify your "subscribers." Which, by the way, is why you usually have to fill out 50 of those damn surveys for all the other trade journals you get. Or they call you on the phone asking company size, what you make, etc. (They also sell the survey information.) Not the adult trades as much as the mainstream trades.

    Well, I'm not Kath....
    (You may already know that)

But there was an "AVN" magazine BEFORE there was an "AVNOnline" magazine. "AVN" focuses primarily on the Adult Film Industry, but strays across the line. It's also a good read.

"AVNOnline" was actually another magazine before Teddy Communications Bought it and Christened it "AVNOnline"...as in, the online /internet version of their popular AVN Magazine.

And, speaking as an Internext Vendor, I don't have your name.
