Out Of All The Entities In The Adult Industry Why Are So Few...

    Run like 'actual' businesses?

I must admit i have never really understood why people dont run their online ventures like a proper business if they are making money from them.

Even some of the companies that are perceived to be 'large' are just one or two guys working out of their bedroom and not filing taxes, etc.

In the real world more than half the stuff that goes on in adult wouldnt pass muster yet it seems to be par for the course online.

How come the industry isnt operated on a more corporate mindset when it comes to the actual business side of things?

    Regards,

    Lee

You are assuming that out in the real world, people do actually manage their affairs professinally. You might be surprised at how piss poor many so called businesses run their 'real business' so to me, its no wonder that online is the same.

I also think, that in many cases its ignorance, stupidity, and laziness. It's also I think a naivety that what is online is somehow immune or because its online, they are immune.

My book keeping isn't the best, but its all there if the Government wants to see, and look, and I pay the taxes. They one agency I won't mess with. :kickcan:

I agree with both of you, but I think that, particularly in porn, a lot of the people who get into it are not entrepreneurs or business types in the first place, they are guys that like to see guys or girls have sex (or are looking for a free prostitution service)

What I've noticed is there's an incredible lack of professionalism among many in the biz, and an even more amazing lack of common business sense. That isn't to say there aren't some amazing businesspeople and savvy entrepreneurs in the lot, just that those seem to be the exception more than the rule.

its the same as when I started in the new boom business here in Australia which was the telecommunications industry in the early 90's. Every man and his dog was in it for a fast buck and the y went as quickly as they came. Some guys who do porn on the internet are in it for the thrill as well as, like gaybucks said, to use it as a prostitution service. those ones go very quickly but unfortunately, they also leave behind a lot of burnt customers of one sort or another. Just the nature of the game I think.

    Cheers

Because many have no intention of being a real "business" from the get-go.

    2 things here -

    1. the internet has allowed people who can't afford and office or any kind of inventory to start a business. ditto people who don't have the large amount of time you'd have to dedicate to a businses that you used print to advertise - the internet can be a free or very cheap start up. as such, many people who could never run their own business and don't know much about it can do their thing.

    2. i see LOTS of mainstream businesses that aren't run well or sensibly. i see companies all the time slowly going out of business from things that could be fixed instantly - only the owners and ceos don't know enough to recognize the problems. i know people who started businesses with 10 or 20 years of savings - businesses they always dreamed of having without finding out a single thing about business in general or that particular business. it's amazing.

i think the problem here is that the "american dream" says that being your own boss and owning your own home make you a winner and a success. as a result, most businesses fail and many people buy homes because they can - barely - make the down payment, then do without all the things that make their life pleasant to pay for their home or business. and i gather that 25% or more of those homes are foreclosed and over 50% of those businesses fail.

and since over 50% of businesses fail, you can't really say they are run in a particularly businesslike manner...
