Monitor Brightness/contrast

What methods do you guys use to ensure that your display is the true color so that your sites, etc, look right to your customers? I must admit on my desktop, my settings were way off recently, and when I got back a dvd cover from my designer, the back of it looked completely black. Once inspecting it on another computer I could see it correctly. What do you guys do with this issue? Every since then I usually check things on more than one computer, but there must be an easier way.

i use the default settings in my monitor that it came with
