I use www.godaddy.com -- even for a "beginner" -- I've racked up about 15-20 names so far.

I'm sure there is a cure! Maybe we could start a virtual support group of addicted domain purchasers Domains Anonymous (DA).
Hehe
What am I thinking we have the makings of one right here in this thread!

In bulk? 100 per year? I have 1 little personal web domain from godaddy.com. I am a newbie at this. What you need all these domains for? You setup them up for yourself or are these for customers?

godaddy is a dangerous thing to use. if you get one complaint about anything - spam, misuse, whatever - they delete your domain. a lot of people have lost domains the last year or so because of stupid shit.
i use dotster mostly, and ev1servers
im a domain whore & have probly 500, most of which ill never use

I think that many of the webmasters that have a slew of names have purchased groups of names that fit the various niches they promote, so that they can construct good hub sites to attract and filter their traffic. So let's say someone has a paysite toon site ... so they'll pick up a few more toon type domains, put up some free sites, perhaps a fake tgp site or topsite ... and work them all in together in a way that pushes the traffic arriving at any one of those domains to the actual paysite.
