CorbinFisher.com Ditches Digital Rights Management (DRM)

San Diego, CA -- August 31, 2007 -- CorbinFisher.com, the brand incorporating gay adult membership sites AmateurCollegeMen.com and AmateurCollegeSex.com, announced the removal of DRM from all of their sites and videos and the transition to a fully DRM-free, Mac-compatible operating state.

As did many other adult membership sites, CorbinFisher.com (CF) incorporated DRM in to all of their online videos over 2 years ago, believing it would combat piracy and unauthorized distribution in a manner that was promised to be user-friendly and efficient.

However, in a letter announcing the changes and addressed to site members and visitors, CorbinFisher.com stated, "... DRM didn't offer the kind of solution we'd hoped for and while it did counter piracy to a very limited degree, it was apparent it interfered with many users' experiences here at CF to an extent that was entirely unacceptable."

According to that letter, CorbinFisher.com has been in the process of eliminating DRM from their websites (and all accompanying video material) since the spring of 2007. New videos have gone up without DRM, and their catalog of over 500 existing videos have been reformatted as well.

"It's no easy task to make those changes to our entire collection of over 500 (and counting!) videos," the letter stated, "but we decided it was more than worth the effort in order to provide all of our members with the most enjoyable, hassle-free experience when accessing our videos."

According to Brian Dunlap, Vice President of Operations for Excelsior Productions and the CorbinFisher.com network of sites, DRM proved to be an incredible disappointment for them and their members.

"It was hoped, and even promised, that DRM would be this incredible solution and would have negative impact upon content pirates and content pirates alone," said Dunlap, "but it became apparent its impact upon piracy was minimal and its interference with the experience of our legitimate, paying members was extensive."

Continued Dunlap, "We've always had an incredibly loyal customer base, and they deserve to not only be trusted, but also offered a hassle-free and satisfying experience in exchange for their money."

AmateurCollegeMen.com has close to 500 solo and hardcore all-male videos that are now DRM-free, with 2 new, non-DRM videos added per week. Further, AmateurCollegeSex.com's weekly updates featuring college-aged males in hardcore action with females will be entirely DRM-free, as is its catalog of nearly 100 existing updates.

i'm mixed when it comes to DRM on one hand it drops the hassle but on the other the content ends up all over forums and torrents and other file sites

im sure it won't be long before every new video from CF starts showing up on Gay torrents and the likes much as most other gay sites out there that are not DRM-ed.

truth be told that's been happening all along. We found that with DRM, we were paying good money to create hassles for our members and render us incompatible with Mac. There was very little evidence that DRM was doing anything to curb piracy.

DRM is only a part of an overall anti-piracy campaign. You cannot expect it to be a cure all for piracy. You have to back it up with anti-piracy enforcement as well.

DRM keeps the casual user from becoming a pirate and illegally sharing content. There is always going to be the hardcore people that will rip content from DVD and make it available online in P2P.

Piracy can never be eliminated, but it can be curbed and gotten under control.

We are the most aggresive studio when it comes to protecting it's content online and all our content is DRM protected. We are also having the best year we have ever had! For us DRM has not been a problem and has helped slow the casual user from illegally sharing our content.

DRM combined with legal enforcement in P2P and Torrent sites has been successful for us.

    Just another viewpoint. ;-)

I have to agree with Titan. We have been through this discussion many times before and I still believe that drm is a part of surfer education. The reaction I read from surfers has been "you mean we are not supposed to download and share the videos from membership sites?". They believe that it is expected and no problem. There is also a very small but very vocal group of our members that scream when a video is seen somewhere for free that THEY had to pay to watch.

I'm sure that if you asked a million DRM-using producers what their experience with DRM has been, you'd get a million different responses. In our particular case, the experience has been far below than satisfying and we've found it to be a useless technology.

Likewise, in our particular case, the casual trader has never been the real problem. The guy with a couple blogs, a few yahoo groups and thousands of files uploaded to his premium rapidshare account - through all of which he's able to distribute videos to countless recipients - has been the real problem. And DRM's never done anything about those folk.

If you've enjoyed success with DRM, congrats and good on ya! We envy you, trust me.

Have you ever looked at On-Demand Streaming instead of downloads as a way to curb piracy?
Since the content is streamed, it is not cached, so capturing it is difficult.
Plus quite often, it reduces bandwidth consumption, since viewers generally don't watch full videos anyway...

    Just a thought...

guess i lived in a shoe
For some reason I thought WMV DRM cracking was very crude

of course there's always screen capture

and now that I actually looked, SeanCody who's videos are on that private gay torrent site are DRM-ed yet still show up ...

sux for webmasters, but at least you get your URL on the vids

    Good Shit

Brian at Corbin Fisher you might want to ask TitanMan to tell you how they keep Titan videos off THAT big Gay torrents place! Titanman is right they do a good job keeping them off!

New Corbin Fisher's are being uploaded day of release!
BTW even with your Friday release schedule some CF's are showing up on Thursday!

Speaking as a consumer as well I did not see CF-DRM as a problem you guys were lenient the video would play for the life of the PC. Sean Cody by contrast requires a continuing sub, once you move on the vids are toast.

Result I subbed to SC ONCE 2 years ago never been back.
CF,BM,Chaosmen and all the rest I rotate and return on a regular basis. The best of the Best like the 3 above I just keep reuping. I do like the idea of playing on my Mac now and then but it was not major issue.

Now I bet you are saving a bundle on the DRM costs that was prob the motivator for Corbin Fisher.

well since i produce everything on my mac, compatibility is of course huge for me. I'd use DRM for sure if it was easier to implement and use. I think it can be done, but like making a decent cell phone :-), it just takes a long time to figure it out.
