<rant> Why people pay attention to stupid "internet celebrity" people

I'm not normally this cynical, but I just don't understand *why* people give the time of day to people who have virtually nothing good to offer the world but are shameless attention whores.

The specific thing that has caught my attention is the video of Chris Crocker who, I'm sure that everyone by now has heard, posted this ridiculous, tearful rant about why everyone should leave Britney Spears alone.

It's obvious the guy is seeking attention (he admitted in a news story that the video in question was a "second take", so he was clearly acting for the camera) but what I don't get is why people are stupid enough to give Crocker, or Jeffrey Starr or Gaygod (both Myspace "celebrities" among the under 25 gay boy crowd) or -- for that matter -- Paris Hilton any attention.

All of them are basically talentless people who are dying for attention, and they don't care how ridiculous they look... so why don't people see through that and refuse to buy into it?

it's like watching a reality show. people like celebs, but they also love amateurs. web celebs are the best of both worlds. and besides, people love drama.

The Chris Crocker vids are funny to glance at, but I just can't sit through them. It's an act. It has to be. Notice the "for business inquiries" email address on his YouTube page.

Now just wait until it gets out that he used to do porn...

Damned if I know why, maybe its because they are bored? It amazes me how supposed smart people keep falling for the clap trap. Was discussing this at dinner too, how people seem so willing to buy into the latest celebrity bs, like their entire lives depend on it. just crazy. :innocent:

You know what's funny though, is you look at some of these gay internet socialites and they are bigger than any gay pornstar has ever been.

I like Chris Crocker, I think he is HILARIOUS! My boyfriend and I watch his videos like most people would watch a TV show, and crack up the whole time. I have been watching Chris since before this video. Its entertainment, and we don't all have to like the same thing, but as long as he is entertaining some people, then I would guess that he is accomplishing what he set out to do. I say go him!

Very true.. but most of these socialites seem to dissappear quicker than most of the porn stars I know..

Maybe so, but it's intriguing that these unprofessionals can get their names out there to begin with. Porn studios (even combined with affiliate work) cannot attain this level of publicity for models. Somewhere, there is something to be learned here.

Obviously it's more than just throwing up a MySpace with hot pics and friend whoring. Pornstar MySpaces do this and they are supported merely by the novelty factor of having a pornstar on your friends list. There is really no substance. Whereas these non porn guys (a bunch of nobodies) have all eyes on them.

No, they aren't making much or any money off this, but they don't have anything to sell either. If the Gay God ever gets into porn he will become the most popular twink of all time overnight.

So I'm not going to bash these guys for what they've done. Nobody here can do it.

I never ever discount anyone abilitys especially in GWW we have some amazing people in here and on many of the other boards.. Sorry If I hit a nerve I was just giving my opinion.. I dont know if I would compare chris crocker to any of the really intelligent people here or on any of the other boards

I mean look at Me, Pierre Fitch, Dean, Michael Brandon, and many other porn stars who went from being a porn star to doing some really cool things and I think there is even way more than what I listed here but that is just my take on things I suppose.

Im not bashing Chris Crocker and I dont think chip is either.. It is the way they go about things to get attention.. Im sorry I would never self promote myself in that sort of way I rather keep my self dignity and have people respect me and not make an ass of myself but I guess that is just me

I spoke to Gaygod some time back and he claims to have been offered obscene amounts of $ to do porn. He might as well *do* porn because he's pretty much shaking all the goods through flimsy underwear on his various silly cam shows, and I'm sure the only reason people watch is to see that.

I'm not so much bashing the people that do it as I don't get why people give them attention. OK, so maybe Chris Crocker (not his real name) is mildly funny, but I see absolutely nothing redeeming about Jeffrey Starr and I think that the causes that Gaygod supports are more about getting him attention than anything else.

Honestly, I think the reason most porn models never develop any of this sort of cachet is because most of them are simply not motivated. So many of them are more interested in the next party/bongfest/hookup/line of coke they can find, and the ability to look beyond tomorrow is pretty much nonexistent.
It's amazed AJ and me how hard it's been to find motivated models that are willing to put in even a minimal amount of effort to develop themselves, their image/brand, when we're willing to back up the marketing efforts.

So in that way, I suppose I admire the motivation, but I think it's entirely for the wrong reasons and serves no purpose. Perhaps it's just a reflection on society as a whole and how shallow it's become.

God, i sound like a bitter old queen. I'm really not like that

Actually, Kelly Taylor, Pierre Fitch, and Skyler DeVoss are about the only models I'm aware of that anyone ever really hears about promoting themselves on the boards, and I'm being a little generous with Skyler But Kelly and Pierre have a history of working hard, and trying to make a go of it. I think Brent Everett was trying to do so for a while, but never seemed to do much to promote his personality, which I think is key if any of these models are going to do anything remotely like what Jeffrey Star or Chris Crocker have done.

Brent Corrigan blogs, but has managed to alienate practically everyone in the industry, and doesnt' seem to actually accomplish much other than to create drama that drives people away. Are there others I'm missing?

There are LOTS of talentless actors out there that have captured large audiences. The MySpace personas definitely fit that, but I am sure if you put your mind to it you can come up with a lot of hacks that have had their 15 minutes of fame over the years.

Tyra Banks as a talk show host comes to mind.
That guy that lived with OJ.
Eddie Murphy trying to sing [remember 'Party all the Time'?]
