WTF? Miller Beer Apologizes For Supporting Gay Cause

Miller Beer stated that it extends it apology to its support for offensive ads and promotions deemed offensive to Catholics and other Christians. The Catholic League has ended its boycott of the brewer.

In a press statement, Catholic League president Bill Donohue explained today why the group's protest of the Miller Brewing Company ended, "From the beginning of the Folsom Street Fair controversy, the position of the Catholic League has been that it was insufficient for the Miller Brewing Company to simply apologize for the misappropriation of its logo on an offensive Last Supper promotional poster. What we wanted was an acknowledgment that there were other extremely disturbing anti-Catholic aspects to this event".

"We have now secured that missing piece. Miller is now saying that following a review of what happened, ‘we are aware of other disrespectful activities, objects and groups associated with or present at the fair which, like the promotional poster, violate our marketing policies. We extend our original apology to include these unfortunate events and items as well.’" The Catholic League president credited Catholics for their efforts to obtain Miller's apology “This has been a team effort. We are particularly grateful for the support that several bishops and ad hoc groups have shown, especially the wonderful people in Michigan’s Chaldean community".

“The Catholic League is happy that Miller has reconsidered this ugly issue and has no plans to revisit it again. Accordingly, the boycott is off. So, too, is our anti-Miller PR campaign. There may very well be a follow-up meeting with the principals to this controversy; we welcome such an opportunity to convey our concerns to the Miller brass. Now it’s time for everyone who enjoys Miller beer to resume consumption again.”

Hmmm, wonder what kind of waves a Miller boycott would make. I wonder if every gay bar across the country would refuse to carry Miller products if it would make more of a dent in their profits? Who drinks more beer, gay people or Christians?

    "Catholic"

Monks invented Beer (or at least, the beer we drink today)

Although lager wasn't recognized as a style until the 1800s, it's likely the first lagers were brewed in Bavarian monasteries.

Clever monks discovered the virtues of a bitter herb - hops - that helped to preserve and flavor beer, as well as balance the sweetness of the malt. The monks wanted a great tasting; nutritious drink to serve with their meals and during fasting. Beer was used to satisfy the hungry monks because the consumption of liquids did not break the rules of fasting.

The brewer-monks also discovered that fermenting beers in cool cellars provided clean, delightful brews. The sophisticated new beer was later distinguished from the older ale style with the name "lager" a derivation of the German word lagern, which means, "to store." Their love for the beverage turned into a business. The monasteries eventually opened their own pubs and heavily promoted their great tasting beer.

The latest word from Folsom Fair organizers is that Miller will probably still sponsor next year. They just made the minimum concession to get Bill Donahue off their back.

If not, Budweiser is ready to step in. Several beer companies sponsor Folsom Fair at various levels.

I drink hard liquor, when I drink. I'd drink beer in a pinch if I absolutely had to. Asahi is my favorite :groovy:

Miller Beer is another example of a corporation doing anything for a buck.

If you actually read the press release Miller sent out it never actually apologizes for supporting Folsom and does not promise to stop supporting them. Miller marketing people were genius in their careful crafting of the wording. Just enough to call off the Christian attack dogs, but without really ever promising to stop support of Folsom.

Miller did not abandon FSF, they did just enough to shut down the Catholic protest.
