In the industry today, just how invaluable are affiliate webmasters? Could a company have successfull paysites without any affiliates sending them traffic?

Wouldn't that depend entirely on one's definition of being 'successful'?

Its a catch 22 situation I think. The more exposure, from affiliates, the more you can attract customers, on the other hand, the more affiliates you have, the more over exposure of your product can happen.
