    Verizon FiOS 50Mbps

    Source: Engadget

Not content with blazing up your local connection at 20Mbps downstream and up, Verizon has once again bumped its already-painfully-fast FiOS broadband service into the realm of ridiculous. According to reports, the company is now offering a 30Mbps / 15 Mbps service at $89.95 a month, and the nerve-shattering 50 Mbps / 20 Mbps speed at $139.95. The telecom has also introduced symmetrical connections in all 16 states where it currently offers FiOS service, with a 20Mbps / 20Mbps on the up and down, starting at $64.99.
Available States: DE, MD, PA, SC, NH, ME, TX, WA, OR, IN, CA, VA, MA, RI, FL
Anyone think this will have a slow chain reaction on server bandwidth costs? As surfers gain access to faster DL times on larger data chunks, will hosting costs come down on their once, larger packages, because of a new, higher demand?

Bandwidth costs will absolutely start coming down however, with faster download speeds, surfers will start demanding larger file sizes so the savings in bandwidth costs will be off-set by the larger files so we wont actually 'notice' significant savings.

Bandwidth costs have actually been falling for years and as they fall, file sizes have been getting bigger and bigger. 10 years ago bandwidth overage charges were in the region of $8+ per gig, these days overages are around $0.50 per gig or lower.

Tony from NatNet mentioned something about this at the Phoenix Forum last year on the panel we were on together and he basically said what i mentioned above, costs go down but usage goes up.

If only......Im paying $80 per month for a 1.5mbps/512 service. the charges here in oz ARE truely outrages and if I wanted comparable to speeds to the states, we pay an absolute fortune for it. Consider yourselves lucky over there....:maxpower:

    Yeap

Well once thing is for sure and that is that the increased broadband will really impact our business. I see a day when surfers will get exactly what they want which I think is full length streaming videos and then they will just get them from the BIG companies producing in California (we all know the names).

Changes are coming for the "little guy" indeed. Our days are numbered...

Bandwith is the US is actually way behind some other countries. Reason? A few companies control the BW to actual consumers.

Usage goes up / BW goes down.

I do love the fact that we can upload faster than most of our clients can download.

Just the other day I had a member request that I make smaller pics for him as he had to wait a long time to download one of our 780x560compressed to '70' .jpg images. (approx 112k)

It actually brought back memories of BBS and 16k modems

I'm surprised that some of the bigger porn companies haven't started offering free DSL to their members ...

"Pay $39.95 to be a member of our huge site and we'll pay your $19.95 DSL service!"
