If you were starting a new website today...

I got some nice domain names registered and am trying to decide what to do with them so I can become a suceesful affiliate. What would you do if in my shoes? Blogs? TGP sites? Tube sites? What business model do you think has the most potential for growth in 2008?

Well, some of what you do depends on the domain names and how they'd "fit" what you ultimately decide to do with them.

Something that I practice is "never putting all my eggs into one basket" ... so if something goes belly up, I'm not totally starting over from scratch. Won't hurt to try a couple of things, see what you actually enjoy doing and then slowly expand as you get a better feel for what your talents are.

don't let the domains you own control what you decide to do. working at something you enjoy or marketing sites you like is important. also IMO creating a site to fit a domain is the opposite of what works.

if i were starting with my existing webmaster experience, i wouldn't start a site - i'd start a network - which, btw, is what i'm currently doing. if i were starting a site without webmaster experience, i would start a blog.

but i also don't start off by buying a domain or domains. i start off by considering what niche or niches i want to promote or what site or sites. OR i start with a concept. then i buy the domains. i have a newbie friend who recently bought 20 domains, and they're not bad domains but not one of them works for the project he's finally starting on.

Most of the domains I got are related to jocks, college guys, straight men, etc., which are my personal favorites. I was surprised at how many of the names I wanted were availble.

I like the idea of a "network" with a mixture of blogs, TGP/MGP's and maybe even tube sites (but with only authorized content).

Well said, as usual Patti! I don't care for twinks but I once bought a twink domain because I thought I should at least try that market. I failed miserably. I wasted time doing something I hated and it showed in the product. And surfers were not fooled by my feeble attempts.

a tube site is certainly the most effective way to throw away money. most experienced webmasters lose money on bandwidth for their tube sites.

why not start with a blog, then work on a link list followed by several free sites. then you can make a hub that lists your blog and free sites and sponsor sites.

once you're ready to deal with more challenging scripts and trades, maybe it will be time to start a tgp. keep in mind that fhg's usually aren't great performers when it comes to sales, and if you learn to make galleries that sell, using your own galleries will make more sales.

Good advice here! I just launched my first blog, and I agree that a blog would be a great first site for a newbie. I also agree it's important to add new types of sites over time. What works great one year may not be so great in five years time.
