    Music @ Work

    Ladies & Gentlegays,

Just wondering, while you're working, what music or other media do you play for your co-workers / employees / bosses / whatever?

Today I've been subjecting Lee to some podcasts and some serious eurotrash music.

What gets you through the day?

    Xo,

    Duggy

    My iPod is pretty varied.

from lots of barroque and opera to death metal and classic rock.

I've got some 80s pop and I'll even admit to one song by Donny Osmond and the video for "Sexyback."

I generally listen to classical all day but yesterday I had a "Stones Only" day and played nothing but Rolling Stones music all day.

I had a "San Fran 60s" last week and played stuff like Jefferson Airplane, The Turtles, Hendrix (who technically was from Seattle) and Mamas and Papas.

I'm thinking today is going to be Kate Bush day.

I listen to music constantly. One of the first things I learned about being self employed is that if you want to be successful working at home, NEVER turn on the television. Especially in the case of writing, television is out. So --- it's music. And for me music is a perfect accompaniment to writing.

I bought an office stereo setup with XM Radio. It's always on. My pre-programmed channels that I listen to often are the 70s channel and Fred (progressive 80s) Upop is a good channel for current rock that includes European artists. I listened to the showtunes channel a lot last year, less this year. And there's their dance channels, of course.

Austin also happens to have a great local NPR public radio station (KUT FM). Their show from 9am to noon is called Eklektikos, and I've listened to that since I was in college. Turn it on and you might hear classical, you might hear the Rolling Stones, or you might hear Rufus Wainright, Kate Bush, Wendy Carlos or Judy Garland..it's whatever - plus there's always interviews with bands and cultural events going on in Austin. And Friday afternoons just are not Friday afternoons to me unless I have Horizontes on the radio... which is our station's local music program featuring music from Latin America/Brazil. I've discovered so many great things listening to those two shows.

Austin also has one of the best classical music FM stations on Earth - KMFA. It is one of the few classical music stations that does not simply play the "Three B's" all day. They play all kinds of classical music from old to 20th century. They even have an interesting regular program called Ancient Voices. KMFA is the first place I ever heard a regular radio show devoted one of my favorite things - movie soundtracks. The guy who programs it always makes a great show, easily 100x better then the ultra-lame "XM Cinema" channel. Other than the middle of the night (which is some satellite feed) KMFA is a constant joy.

Also, in the quirky Austin tradition, KMFA is completely privately owned and privately funded classical music radio station, without commercials. I think it is like one of six or seven stations like that in the entire United States.

All of that stuff is on my often-listened-to list.

Love that last Within Temptation album. "What have you done" is presently my cell phone ring, too.
